Thanks Lance. I am enjoying the 737 very much,...I feel like it will be a long time, if ever, before I will ever need to upgrade my pre-amp.
But I mainly wanted to make clear that I didn't get it because I was unhappy with the Focusrite Voicemaster Platinum. |

Rob, for what it's worth, I used a TLM-103/Focusrite VMPP combo for about three years. It was just fine. I achieved every VO goal I had ever set for myself with that setup. And I would have still had it, if not for the crappy quality of the switches (the ones with the red lights) that are poorly designed and almost certain to fail sometime after the warranty expires. Getting the switches replaced out of warranty (with the same crummy switches, which will also fail) was almost as expensive as buying a new unit and they are NOT user serviceable.
I actually toyed with the idea of buying two or three of those VMPP boxes and considering them "disposable", but I decided not to reward Focusrite with any more business.
Try your 737sp sometime with a Neumann 170 if you get the chance. Another great combination.

5 tubes, 12AX7, 12AT7, and 12AU7. They all have the same pin layouts, so you can somewhat mix and match, however you'll find that the biggest difference between them is the gain factor for each type. If you've got an input with a 12AX7 and it's overdriving a bit too much, just swap it out with a lower gain, such as a 12AT7.

Rob,
After giving lots of thought about a 737, I decided dig a little deeper and went with a Requisite PAL Plus MkIII about a year ago. That's my main rig. My secondary/backup pre is a UA LA-610 Signature Ed. that I recently took delivery on. |

| I gotta tell ya, the 737 is probably my single most favorite audio component that I own. It took my v/o's to another level. I would buy another one in a heartbeat if something ever happened to mine. Actually, something did happen after 6 months of ownership. If any of you buy one, be CERTAIN that your not using phantom power TWICE as it will fry the I/O board. It's a cheap fix ($50) but let me tell you from firsthand experience that the sight of smoke billowing out of the top of your $2500 pre will freak you out. |

there's only one phantom power button on the 737 - were you using a mic powered and THEN ran it into the 737 w/ the +48v switch on as well?

Yep, I should have clarified that. At the time, I was using an MBox w/phantom and giving it extra phantom with the 737. I figured, two phantoms were better than one.  |

| I wasn't planning on picking up a 737sp, but a local studio is going out of business and was having a fire sale, so I grabbed it. It was only two years old, barely used, and perfect. I very much like the way it sounds. Smooth, rich and creamy. I couldn't pass it up for the price and figured if I didn't like it, I could flip it easily and probably make a few bucks in the process. But I'm digging it. It's a keeper. |
