A new client is inspired by your "conversational" style and wants to create a whole new campaign that includes your name. Small market, high volume, short runs. Do you use your own name? _________________ Playing for a living...

As most people wouldn't know I don't see any problem with it.
I did it for a national campaign about 16 years ago and .........well, and nothing really. |

Small market, high volume, short runs, major bucks.
Testimonials/Spokesperson arrangements command a big, fat differential. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I think I'm leaning toward Philip on this one. If this was in my own town and people would actually know who Connie was (well a few people would know), then I think I'd be more inclined to ask for more $$, but this is in a market far far away... _________________ Playing for a living...

What they said - PLUS! As you well know, anytime you give your name (as in Spokesperson) you run the risk of losing other clients who have a similar product and if the product is not delivered as indicated, you run the risk of libel. Weigh your risks before signing on the dotted line.
I have a client which recently was bought out by their competitor - I am the original clients spokesperson (not by name, but by voice). I have recently been named in a lawsuit because the "buy-out" company did not deliver the product as indicated in their advertising. My attorney assures me that I have nothing to worry about as I have the written contract which indicates the extent of my liability - none. I only warrant my voiceover services; not any work performed by the company.
On the other hand, I have gained great notoriety from the work performed for the original company. (Albeit a smaller market, I have landed several other clients from the services I provide.)
Good luck and Toodles

Funny this should come up... I JUST got an email from a client for an ad that will run in malls across the country (it's more of a "here's what's on... and this is Caryn for What's On...) , and my name is in it.
In this case, I don't mind, and I'll use my name.
However, for another client that does web presentations for B2B clients, one of which I was narrating, they included my name. I asked them to change the name. I just didn't feel comfortable "promoting" the product in that way. I don't know why... _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

No last name - and it is a small market family owned furniture store - I'm thinking the risk is low. The only question is if it needs to be Connie - perhaps it could be Carolyn ... _________________ Playing for a living...

Connie,
Are you replacing Tonya Roberts (ex-Charlie's Angel) for the Las Vegas ads?...baby!
I agree with others....if it's a market you are not close to or well known in for on-cam stuff/news/radio, why do they need to use your real name at all? Use your middle name.
By the way, I just figured out why Tonya Roberts is famous not too long ago. Sorry, I am only 31. _________________ Ben

Unless it's you endorsing something you're closely associated with in something like the VO - producing world, I'd consider using a stage name or first name only.
I'd have to ask myself and then the client "why me?", "why my name?". I'd think your name has a particular value to you above your abilities as a voice talent.

FWIW, there are a million or more "Connies" out there. Since there is no last name involved... its not a product endorsement... and its in another market where it could be any number of other Connie's (maybe its name of the advertiser's wife)... what possible difference could it make. Just sayin... _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |
