Be careful. Broadcasting school leads you on a completely different career path than VO.
Also, if you really, really want to learn broadcasting, community college classes will teach you what you want to know for a lot less money. Financial aid available, but it's so cheap you probably won't even need it. Your instructors will be the same working pros and been-there-done-that types that the broadcasting school has. And you'll likely learn Pro Tools, which is the industry standard. You can pick up Adobe Audition easily just by using it.
In a big city, you can sometimes even find good VO classes at a regular college or university.
You can use that same $10k and get top-notch coaching AND a kick-ass demo AND set up a home studio!
Send me the $10k and I'll arrange all of that for you, and get you an agent!

I graduated from Broadcasting school in 1996. It was the same deal... 10 months....but ONLY $2,000 back then...lol I can tell you from experience.....unless you plan on being a dj...or a news/sports caster....about the only thing that will help you in your VO career that you will learn, is how to time your reads so that if it's a :60 spot, you finish it in 59 seconds, or 29 seconds if it's a :30. The rest is all geared toward working at a station. _________________ TG2

never mind what I said before.
apparently, my having working in radio cultivated some kind ofability to skim the text. and i missed that part.

HUH? ... 10 Freekin K !!!
That's $235 a week... a grand a month!!!
As others have said, unless radio is your goal... I truly hope you can run away from this "deal." Tuition at our local community college (AA degree in broadcasting, labs, books, supplies etc) for a full time student is only $1,800 a year ... or $3600 to an accredited degree. _________________ . I've seen worse, but unless you plan on doing radio as a profession, you've got to compare this against a good VO setup and training, which will get you right into VO (as opposed to radio) with a home studio and probably some $ left over (depending on how you do things). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I have to concur. I went to broadcast school as well. This was way back when I was 19, and then I wanted to be in radio. If you want VO to be your career I strongly recommend you don't go to broadcast school. I will parrot what everyone else is saying and spend that money on acting classes, getting your demo top notch and getting the basic gear needed to audition and record. |

Chistopher, please report back and tell us that you haven't signed anything yet. As I hope you can tell, we would all much rather see you spend a small percentage of that money to get training that will actually help you toward a goal which we all believe is of more interest to you.
Or, come back and tell us all to go to hell. But even if your heart is set on broadcasting school, as you can see from others who have posted, there are much more reasonably priced options. |

$10K??? Oh my, no. I take back everything I said because that is TOO MUCH to pay, even if you WANT a station job. You WILL NOT get $10K worth of value from that. For sure you can pick up the same knowledge for less.

...except, perhaps, the ability to make a $10K salary in radio... That's why I pulled the escape hatch on broadcasting and started studying the Microsoft Borg. _________________ Greg Littlefield

I checked out their school's site and the program looks incredible. It's a 10 month, all inclusive program that includes broadcast theory, air shifts, digital production (using Adobe Audition!), copywriting, newscasting and programming. They even take finanical aid! I've finally decided to get myself really truly going in the world of VO. I believe this will help. I've been hemming and hawing for over a year now and there's no time left for that. It's either go or get off the pot.
Any thoughts? Let me know.
Your pal.

Hey, Chris!
Many years ago I was an adjunct instructor for just one course at a broadcasting school. It didn't take long to be really embarrassed that I was teaching there. It was basically a scam to get student loan money from people with dreams of fame and fortune. In my class of about 15 students, I figured maybe one had a real shot at an on-air radio job. And the pay in radio is horrible. (During my stint in radio I was paid minimum wage.) I suspect a lot of former broadcast students bail out of the industry before paying back their loans.
If you want to spend $10K on an education, go study something that will enrich your life. Broadcasting school isn't likely to do that. If you do want to be on the radio, volunteer at a community radio station. |
