I feel for you brother...Simular thing happened to me a couple years ago. I owned VICTORHARRIS.COM right...I missed one friggen month after it expired cause I was in Iraq...next thing I know someone down in Dallas owns it and has it parked with nothing on it. I ended up having to go the dot net route.

Aren't there laws against cyber-squatting on someone's name domain?

I wish we had a lawyer hip to net-working on this board.
Let me ask around.

My ideal domain name (davidhouston dot com) is owned by an identically-named, fairly serious singer-songwriter based in San Francisco.

He's had it for years and updates it regularly; I don't think there's much chance I'll ever be able to grab it from him.

I might just add that cyber-squatting is not against the law - yet. Many companies are doing just that and making BIG bucks off it.

My ideal name is "thevoice.com". I own the trademark to "The Voice", so I decided - why not? It's a great name for my site...

It has been squatted for several years. (Now it is some Form Filing system or a contest site - that has yet to run a contest). I own the trademark to "TheVoice", so I decided - why not? It's a great name for my site...

So I decided, how about "frankthevoice.com" - again cyber-squatted. I contacted the squatter - lo and behold - he would sell it to me for $3800.00 USD, the compnay was out of a foreign country. I didn't bite.

Lawyers are not of much help as the internet is global and un- (for the most part) regulated. It's a first come first serve basis. The internet is the enteprenuers dream in many ways.

Protect your brand, protect your image and enjoy what you have. Someone else may think they can make money by selling your own name back to you.

Yes, another ineffective federal law. see: http://www.keytlaw.com/urls/acpa.htm

Although this 'law" sounds like it has teeth, it is limited to just the USA. Thus negating it's reach from foreign cyber-squatters.

Additionally, the legal 'hoops' one needs go thorugh can be more grueling than the damage it would casue to just let it the domain name go off into the netherworld.

Re-brand, revise, or re-work seems to be the magic words for domain names that are lost to squatters.

There are some laws, yes. Take it from me, I know a bit about it, since I bought www.charlottebobcats.net before the team did! Yes, I did receive a nasty letter in the mail from the NBA. I still have a copy of it. Yes I did get phone calls from the team attorney.

I still own it.

Someone has bought up popular men's names and an initial-- I went to try to get DylanG . com for my son and the SAME BUNCH seems to have all the "DylanX" domains.

Screw them.
I hate that. I suppose it's good ol' entrepreneurialism, but I hate being rooked for a domain name.

yeah. My name .com has been taken ever since I was savvy enough to look up ownership (mid 90's maybe?). Owned by the same dude (another Brian H) but he's never put a site up on it. I would really like to have it but he never lets it expire. I've thought about asking him to sell it to me, but I imagine if I asked he'd envision big bucks.

Yep, I've seen it happen too many times, Anthony.

Renew early and renew often.

Of course, my domain used to belong to someone else, but it was expired for a year (I think) when I picked it up. Wink

In other news, vodka.com just sold for $3 million...

I wanted to buy my name but when I tried to get it I found this:

JoeRodriguez.com is for sale!
To purchase this domain contact BuyDomains,
the domain experts, at ***-***-**** (number changed to protect the innocent).

It was going to expire in July of this year and I tried to snag it but the guy renewed. Oh well. I might try again next year.

Joe, if I may make a suggestion regarding this outfit... move on!

They will not let the name expire (especially if you've already contacted them about purchasing it), and if you do attempt to purchase it from them, I would hazard a guess that the lowest rate you will be offered is no less than $1500USD... They have a couple of names that I attempted to register a couple of years ago (for another company that I own), and they have been pretty consistent in their solicitation e-mails and "great deals on the domain name YOU want!" The initial purchase fee for one of the domains that I wanted was $3800 and the last "special offer" that I received was for $1500... definately a significant reduction, still a bit too rich for my blood...

The nice thing about living in Canada (at least as it pertains to the internet) is that I can snag the exact domain with .ca and there are very few companies snatching .ca names and holding them, hah!!! take that Mr. Domain name hog!!! hmph... that was interesting!

Yeah, what Anthony said... DO NOT LET YOUR DOMAIN NAME EXPIRE!!! And if you do plan on letting it expire, would be so kind as to let me know so that I can register it and then sell it back to you for a terribly sickening profit Wink

**Edit**

I just checked the domain name and it's only being sold for $488... that seems crazy cheap compared to the "special offer" that I recieved. I guess I stand corrected on my above comments!

Cheers,

Brian
