The iPad I bought for my booth will pay for itself in ink & paper savings in under a year.
As for marking up your script, with a clear screen protector you can write directly on the screen with a
dry-erase marker. (For longer docs or major script changes, there are plenty of a s that let you mark up Word docs,
Excel docs, PDFs, etc.)
Other advantages:
- The iPad itself is silent
- Page turns are silent
- It doesn't generate any heat in the booth
- Revised scripts available immediately via email
- Some great mounting options are available
And oh yeah, the iPad has a couple of other, cool capabilities. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Though mine is not the "I" pad, I heartily recommend going tablet, for all the reasons Doug has stated. I'm a believer. _________________ Don Brookshire

I'm using an HP TouchPad in my booth and I'm very happy with it. _________________ Be well,

Jacob what a wonderful idea. I too am a throwback and prefer to read from paper scripts which I mark up all the time as a lot of what I might do involves dialogue and character and changes in mood-highlight pens are my friends. _________________ jonahcummings |

Technology has come a long way since the pen and the highlighter....
I've been using Moon+ReaderPro.... Android based, with multi-color highlighting, annotation and markup capabilities, and most importantly, auto-scrolling (adjustable on the fly), just like the teleprompter you wish you could afford.
Find it in the Android Market, just 5 bux.... cheap.
Come on in, the future's fine...... _________________ Don Brookshire

Doug's is the iPad, Bob's is the HP Touch, and what is your weapon of choice?

And to get REALLY techy (and further off topic), add AirTurn to your iPad, Mac or PC for long script control. I saw it at NAMM, pretty neat gadget. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Currently using the Motorola Xoom, a 10in tablet running Android ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest iteration of Android). I much prefer the 10in form factor to my original tablet, the 7in Samsung Tab.... though the 7in is a decidedly portable device that, unlike larger devices, will fit in your pocket, the 10in is much better for reading copy.... and as Doug says, is QUIET.
However, I am seriously considering picking up an iPad, so I can try the mobile recording setup Beau Weaver is using. There are more interface devices (Alesis io dock, etc) and software recorders (GarageBand, etc) available for the iPad than for Android at this time, but I expect that to change over time.
Regardless, the market for used tablets is a bargain hunter's paradise right now.... Used iPads, HP Touchpads, Galaxy Tabs, and others can be had for as little as $200 on craigslist these days. The more I use mine, the more I neglect my PC and laptops.
Worth checking into, and worth adding to your arsenal.... _________________ Don Brookshire

I guess I accidentally turned off the notification of new messages in this thread, so I've been out of the loop here since last week.
Rick, to answer your question - all you need is a wireless mouse (and of course, a video card that supports dual monitors). I'm using Windows 7, and you need to go into the Control Panel>Display>Settings to move your "desktop" to the 2nd monitor. It'd be tedious to write down all the steps here - let me know if you need help and I'll run you through it. But it is easy enough to do. So basically, I turn control of my "desktop" over to the 2nd monitor, and I scroll using the wireless mouse in my booth. You could also get a wireless keyboard in there too if you wish to edit copy on the fly, but my booth is too small.
A few issues with tablets - they don't seem to play well with PowerPoint, according to my research. I have a client who supplies scripts in PowerPoint form, so that was a deal-breaker for me. Also, I thought tablets might be too small and I'd have to scroll too often (though I might feel otherwise if I actually was able to try it). Keep in mind I'm a 48 yr old dude who will be needing reading glasses in my not-too-distant future.
When I get the chance, I will record a "before" and "after sample and post it here, to find out if anyone can hear the reflection off my monitor. _________________ Best regards,

Hey Tom, I think you missed the part of my post where I said I'm already running two monitors, split screen, side by side, so I'd have to get ANOTHER card and run a THIRD monitor, of which I already have another monitor.
But I hesitate to run three monitors and two mice... it all sounds a little bulky rather than just using a tablet. Of course the easiest solution is to keep killing trees. I live in Oregon, and we've got a bunch, and I don't want to put the paper guys out of work, and, and, and... _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

If anybody wants to go the HP TouchPad route, Woot is offering them today for 219.99.
I figure, if it's good enough for Bob Souer... _________________ Dangerous.

For long scripts consider this $20.00 program Prompt Puppy http://www.promptdog.com/puppy/
I have and use the Prompt Dog version, it works well _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

i wondered about the two-mouse set-up, and whether a wireless mouse (and keyboard) confuses the computer with its cabled mouse and keyboard.
presumably, no? _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

was looking into ridiculously expensive KVM splitter boxes (1 PC with multiple keyboards, monitors, mouses). then i accidentally discovered that if you are using the PS/2 mouse and keyboard, a USB mouse and keyboard can be connected at the same time, and both can control the PC. So all you need is a splitter for the monitors.
Something like Input Director or similar allow you to extend your range over a second PC. |

Run an extra mouse if you just want scroll control or get a keyboard and mouse and run it into your booth or where ever your actual record space is. Really helps on phone patch sessions when you are recording, editing and saving with clients on the line. |
