This mixer will have to do.

Think of "Aux" as a second output where you choose what audio to put there.
BTW George, 299- 349 seems to sound like a fair price for what you are asking... _________________ Does life start at 40? |

So, a fair price for a unit that features:
1- Flexible but super easy to use mixer
2- Phone hybrid
3- Audio interface
4- Very clean mic preamp
5- Automatic monitor muting switch (like in a broadcast console)
6- Years of trouble-free use
Is $350?!
Hmmm... Mike Sommer may be right.
Clearly this thing won't be built by my Dad in his basement, or by anyone in North America.
But, you never know what manufacturer might be visionary enough to take this project on... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

My initial price range was predicated on the fact that I've spent over $500 on the separate pieces of equipment necessary to cover that feature list, and much of my equipment is entry-level at best. The cost for the features described would be a bargain at $500- especially with a decent preamp. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

The custom case will cost $100.00
As far as a preamp would go, instead of reinventing the wheel, one could use one that can be cloned like a Quad 8, it's small powerful and very nice. Or just leave it out _________________ The Blog:

While most would not use it, add an insert for each input.
An on board DA with individual trims would allow all the devices, hybrid, isdn, etc to be feed all the time. A single return with button selection for
which device might work. |

I say that $650 to $700 would be a great cost for all those things. I mean, jeez, a Grace m101 costs like $550 by itself.
And I totally want inserts. _________________ Brad Venable

i hope it's accompanied by the friendly user guide George's Mixer For Dummies
Also, it would have to be disabled on powder days (a sad shortage this season so far) _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

The Grace is a simple preamp, with about a $50 worth of wholesale parts and they crank them out by the thousands.
When talking about a custom mixer from scratch, this is not a weekend project. I know guys that do this for a living that spend weeks months getting it to work. Every time you add a feature it adds another layer of complexity, and the possibility of noise.
When you start talking about "cheap" 4 or 5 channel mixers form folks like Yamaha, Mackie and the like, you're talking about mixers that have not changed in 10 years or more because it adds major cost to the units.
I've been thinking about this for a long time, and to get where one would need to be in terms of functionality, for the specific need of VO would require a a great deal of investment.
Custom gear comes with a custom price, and $2000 is not unreasonable in the world of custom electronics. As a matter of fact that would be just a start.
For an example: An LA2A compressor is built by hand, it takes a one man 4 to 6 hours to build one in the traditional point to point tube method. It took me a week, after spending a 5 days collecting all the parts.
To get a mixer of this sort out, would require a major manufacturer to do it. _________________ The Blog:

Bill, only one problem - the Konnekt6 is firewire not USB. Not many computers come with firewire anymore. I only have USB. _________________ Gregory Best
