The LA school of VO recording has it that one should angle the Sennheiser MKH416 down at the VO so his lips are 2mm from the talkie end THEN turn the compressor to preset WTF. If all LEDs do not illuminate when the VO looks as if he's about to say something add 40db of gain to everything. Interestingly enough the idea of how to use a 416 for "movie trailers" came from the manager of a Drive-in movie theater (yes I know it's a cinema). Apparently people in the front rows were real b*ggers for not closing their cars door when the filum, sorry "movie" was about to start.

Problem was solved at Drive-ins. Audio punch using above detailed settings was such during the first movie trailer that the energy from the speakers would slam shut any car door within a 15 mile radius. This uniquely American phenomenon is also the explanation for a number of teenage boys who had flat buttocks and pregnant girlfriends.

............IN A WORLD.

ROLFLMA -- that is funny! So the 416 is at least partially responsible for the babyboom from the era of the drive-in?

I've talked with my parents about audio gear before but um, I'm so not discussing this idea with my mother <<hands over ears screaming I DON'T WANT TO KNOW I DON'T WANT TO KNOW I DON'T WANT TO KNOW>> I'm pretty sure that is the reason I have two older brothers...

So that is where I went wrong, I still have not found the" WTF" preset button.

and Phillip also quips: "... add 40db of gain to everything."

I thought that is how they did things for radio anyway.

Here is the analog version of the "Home Studio Compressor".

Does this explain my strange craving for popcorn everytime I gaze lovingly at a 416? Ninja

This is exactly what they teach us in those high-priced L.A. VO seminars. And you guys got it free.

I was going to refer to the "symbolic" nature of the 416, purely as a Freudian allusion, but.....

PB, why don't you give us your honest opinion of the 416 you used in the wee huttie vs your U87? I've seen no more pix of the 416 in thew huttie only the 87.

Sold to Soundgun after three days. Like lettuce, too thin and crispy and very politician like, dishonest. What makes it work as a location sound mic at the end of a boom makes it wrong to my ears for studio based VO work. That's my honest opinion. I used an MKH50 in a studio setting and it is a much better mic for VO work, indeed it's also "digital friendly" for some reason unknown to me. The MKH50 is a smaller mic in terms of length and more expensive. Buyers will get all that they perceive is good about the 416 with some added addy things.
