Here's the deal...I recently bought a Groove Tubes GT67 which I use with a Tube Tech preamp. However... as much as I love this setup, it constantly annoys me that I can't go into the booth, switch on the gear and record instantly; instead I have to wait 30-60 minutes for the tubes (8 in total) to warm up, or leave it running all day long. I also find that the sound of the equipment changes slightly over the day, so my recordings made in the morning sounds different from those I do in the afternoon. Sooo, I consider getting a new non-tube based setup, and was wondering if anyone have an opinion about this combo: an M930 through a Grace 101 (or the new M101).
I have no experience with the Grace, but I'm familiar with the M930. Would be interesting to know if anyone had tried the two together. Would also be interested in other ideas for a preamp to match the M930. _________________ Regards,

Jacob,
I'm a huge fan of the Millennia STT-1. It has both tube and solid state circuits and I can record instantly without firing it up an hour before the session. If you're interested, I did a review a while back. Just click HERE to read the review.
You can find the Millennia website here. |

if you have a tube-based preamp that doesn't have point-to-point circuitry, then just leave it run. You'll have to replace tubes more often, but you won't have to worry about the drastic sound changes that occur if you just let the preamp warm up 20 minutes before trying to use it.
If you ever get the chance to use a U47, you can really notice it. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Guys, thanks for your input.
The Millennia is indeed a nice box, but way to expenssive I'm afraid... I guess I could trade in the Tube Tech but I'm not going to right away, so the new pre would be kind of a "backup", therefor I don't wanna spend too much... after all, the M930 is not exactly cheap either.
Sorry I forgot to mention I was kinda on a budget.
And I really don't want to have the tube mic & pre running 24/7.
On another board someone mentioned the Great River ME-NV1.... also very nice, but a little more than I would spend. SPL maybe, anyone? _________________ Regards,

I'm looking at the Speck 5.0 again. I've tried it and liked it and wished I had bought it last year. It's about $750-$800 with a subtle switchable output transformer, 4.6k input impedance, 70 db gain, sweepable HPF, phase reversal and pad. It's half-rack size and is a dorky light grey. It's certainly a tick below GR and Hardy in some ways...but I think it's better than either in creating a clean 3-D sound and I like it much more than the Grace and other mid level preamps. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Just the preamp really. Sucks, but unless you're using some of the boutique products, a true tube preamp is going to do this.
I wouldn't get rid of that preamp though... it's a pretty solid performer.
FWIW, the Speck isn't bad for the $ _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Exactly, and I would still rely on the tube setup for specific jobs, but I have several clients who like the idea of ultra-fast turnarounds, like within the hour, and in those cases it sucks having to wait for the equipment to warm up properly.
Lance, thanks for the info about the Speck. Didn't really knew about it so I checked, and it looks really interesting.... hmmmm! _________________ Regards,
