Looks like a promotion for Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but it nearly shut the city.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/31/suspicious.packages.ap/index.html
Packages are also being found in LA, NYC, Seattle.
part of the statment from Turner Boardcasting:
"The "packages" in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger. They are part of an outdoor marketing campaign in 10 cities in support of Adult Swim's animated television show Aqua Teen Hunger Force. They have been in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Francisco and Philadelphia. Parent company Turner Broadcasting is in contact with local and federal enforcement on the exact locations of the billboards. We regret that they mistakenly thought to pose any danger." _________________ DBCooperVO.com

You just can't buy THAT kind of publicity.
Then again, if they were there for 3 weeks and weren't noticed until someone phoned it in... _________________ Greg Littlefield

I hope the city of Boston sends Turner a bill for all the emercency crews that were deployed.
Storrow Drive and the Red Line were shut down for part of the day. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I read that a part of I93 was also cut off. Ouch. It looks like the AG is going to be out for blood, so we'll see who gets the bill... _________________ Greg Littlefield

Outdoor "marketing campaign", my ass.
People who put up billboards are required to get permission, and pay for the priviledge.
Sticking magnetic signs that light up at night under bridges or in other public space is vandalism. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Yeah, some blog twerps were saying things like
It's an LED not an IED!!!!
Ha freakin' ha.
Blow me. It wasn't the little guy that freaked people out, it was the batteries and wires.
It was a nifty idea made stupid by the lack of proper permission, notification of authorities, and the fact that BOSTON is the place where the planes took off on 9/11— so I kind think it's not unreasonable for people to be freaked out. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I read that Mumbles wants to send someone a bill for the $500,000 in police costs....as Bugs Bunny would say "Whatta Maroon" thing to do.
But then again, it's another day that makes me think how great it is to be working from home and not commuting to Boston!

The idea is awesome!
But what DB said would be the proper course of action!
Get permission BEFORE you do it.
I could have been a fun thing, but now the costs of this "little" campain have probably gone through the roof!
Oh well back to the drawing board!

Dang. I guess it's safe to say a nerve was hit. I agree that it was a great idea that was executed very stupidly. They'll pay for it I'm sure. But, it did get them some publicity...even if it is the "you guys are insensitive idiots" kind. _________________ Donovan

It DID make me wonder, how much *paid* advertising coverage could they have bought with $500,000? (That's the estimated costs from Mayor M. in Boston.) They have certainly gotten national exposure with this stunt.
In our super-media-saturated culture, is Vigilante PR the new thing to break through the clutter? If so, I'm glad I'm out of the PR biznez I like little podiums and banners with snack tables in the back of the room...much more my speed.

You and DB got it right.
I'm am currently reading on Digg and /. some of the more moronic things that I've seen when it comes to OPSEC, but it's no less than I expect from people who live in their parents' basement and have never been in that world.
simply put, even if you know it's not an explosive device, you proceed as though it were...
Even before 9/11, this kind of stuff wouldn't be acceptable. If you were to leave stuff out for whatever purpose (advertising, scientific monitoring, etc.) you contacted the appropriate authorities and local govt. to ensure that they knew what it was, where it was, and who to contact if there was a problem.
oh well... guess some folks can't help being stupid. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
