Lots of variations!
Failed to mention my setup was all carryon and had no issues with security, although they did open the bag for a cursory check.
I'm working to make everything simpler/smaller so thinking of springing for a MicPort pro because of all the great things I've heard about it!
What kind of tabletop mic stands do you all use?
At home, I use a mic arm and position the mic off-axis above my mouth...so am concerned about using a tabletopper that would put the mic below my mouth.
Any thoughts?
Also, any former CoolEdit Pro users have any useful software settings for downward expansion? _________________ ____________________

I have 3.....kids that is.....the eldest 2 already voice, so I will have to start thinking about getting a mic arm installed on each of their booster seats. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

I picked up an EEEpc. Tiny - 8 1/2 inch screen and small keyboard. Not for everyone although they do have a 10" one available. It has a 16G solid state HD (only 12 avail for files) bit it's more than enough for on the road. It also comes with 20G of online storage.
I picked up an inexpensive mic - AKG Perception - and use the MicPort Pro - it's got phantom power and a headphone input and the whole shebang fits into my - get this - HANDBAG. Yep, along with my wallet and everything else.

Sounds like you found yourself a pretty golden combo there. It's the same combo I've been experimenting with to market as the next VO2GO system, which I had on display at VOICE 2008. Which AKG Perception model do you use?
We're working out bugs with the CEntrance USB driver and Source Connect, but should be prime time soon as the two manufacturers work together on a solution. I have had successful tests using the system. Now that Dell has entered the field of tiny laptops, expect the prices to drop on these things even more. Apple, what you got??
Oh yeah, shameless plug, Purchase a MicPort Pro in the U.S. between August 6, 2008 and September 15, 2008 and get a $15.00 mail-in rebate.
I've got a few in stock now as we are the latest addition to their list of dealers.

Perception 120 - least expensive of the lot -$99. - It actually was recommended to me by the pro audio place I deal with. I didn't want to bring my main mic and was looking for something inexpensive just for the trip. I had already tried and didn't like a couple of the USB mics I found elsewhere so I called them even though I figured they wouldn't have anything really inexpensive. They set it up in their mic demo room for me to try out and prefaced it by telling me they usually don't deal with mic's in that price range but when they first heard it they were just amazed at how good it sounds. So was I - at least I like it on my voice.
The EEEpc is also less than a quarter of the price of any of the major manufacturer's tiny laptops - and for something for the road I don't need more. |

Cool thing about these Atom-based PCs is that with Dell's latest offering, the pricing is probably going to drop by Christmas.
I have to say that after using Melissa's and George's sub-lappys, that I was sold on the idea of getting one and using it with one of my mics for travel purposes. While the smallest ones didn't work too well for me (big hands, small keyboard... you know how it goes), the 10" models look like a winner for those of us with bigger paws. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I've got an XP laptop and despite all the tweaks I've given it the sound is okay. Tonight I set up a separate user account named "Audio" that is pure and clean. I won't even set up Windows Media defaults for it...I simply set up all the display and operating settings I had for the rest of the computer and it's working like a charm.
Now it sounds like it should. This camper is happy. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Yep, that Dell Mini 9 changes the rules, now that a major name brand is selling a laptop of this form-factor. With their support, flexible configurations, and low pricing, looks like a winner. I am sure the guts are the same as the EEE PC, there can't be too many variations on the Intel Atom chipset. Looks like it could be the next VO2GO machine. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George--So I guess this means that the Mini 9 has enough processor speed to run Source-Connect? Audio TX? Probably needs a tiny USB hub for enough connections, right? Are there variables in ordering from Dell that need to be considered so the machine is totally up to the task? |

Get 1GB RAM, Windows XP, not much else is required (or available). You can add Bluetooth and Webcams for a few bucks each.
AudioTX and Source Connect will both work on the Asus EEE PC, but I can only hypothesize that it will work on the Dell as well, not having had hands on experience with the Mini 9 as yet. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
