It's Veterans/Remembrance Day... to all those vets here who served, thank you!
And, revere the memories of those who served and have passed on.

1914-18 My father served and returned home.
8,500,000 didn't
He's the Sergeant in the middle. By the time he was decorated he was a Major.
"Dad. Why were you made an officer at such a young age?"
"They'd shot every other poor bugger or blown 'em up. If the war had gone on to 1919 I would've been a Field Marshall or in tiny pieces in a ditch full o' cow sh*t somewhere near Ypres !" |

My mother was a Captain in the French Army (I've been looking for the picture of her in uniform, but it looks like she stashed it somewhere).
She was also a translator for the Americans (not an interpreter, a translator of documents) at the Nuremberg Trials.

My dad served and was injured in Korea. After he was healed (hospital in Japan for some months) he returned to duty to serve on the honor guard at the Panmunjon talks.
Daddy's father served in Europe. One of my uncles served in Viet Nam. One of my brothers-in-law served in peacetime; another (ex) bro-in-law served during Gulf War I. We have two servicemembers in the family now: one in England with the US. Air Force at Lakenheath (about to head to Iraq) and the other serving in the Marines as a presidential honor guard member.
Daddy rarely talked about Korea until the last few years. It was very painful for him. A few years ago the Korean government awarded him a medal of honor and he went back there for the ceremony. Ever since then he has been more free with his memories of those years in combat. Icannot imagine how such a sensitive, honorable man experienced what he did and came out sane. But he, and many others, did. And continue to do so.
Last year the VA finally got his classification correct (his injuries were moderate to severe) and he's now getting the help he needs.
Here he is on the occasion of his 50th wedding anniversary to my Mom.

I love to see these photographs.
We attended our town's Veteran's Day parade this morning. I'll post some pictures later. If anybody has photos of their town's parade from today, please post them! It is always so moving to see and hear from veterans at these ceremonies, but I think of them often and appreciate them profoundly.

My father, mother, and father-in-law all served in Vietnam. Thankfully they all made it home.
We're taking the cub scout pack to a nearby war memorial tonight. Let's hope they get a little something out of it. _________________ Jeff

My mother's parents both served in WWI.
My father served in the Korean War aboard the USS Boxer— he was a bomber pilot.
This isn't him, but it shows you the kind of amazing stuff these guys did. Can you imagine landing your plane on a postage stamp in the middle of a tossing ocean?

Remembering Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Anthony Savino, who passed last February. My "uncle" (actually, cousin) and sponsor for my Holy Confirmation when I was 14. I took the name Antonina, female form of Anthony. He served in Korea and was a career military man in the Army Reserves. His cousins Joe (my dad) and Ciccio and Frank also served. He has a son, Anthony, Jr., a helicopter pilot who has done a few tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Thank you to all veterans. May your futures be brighter, soon. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

We who aggrandize mediocrity and who worship the millionaires who bravely face a microphone every day; today bow our heads in silent adoration of those who truly made a difference. Our reward is freedom, those who served sought the most cherished prize of returning home safely and belittle or dismiss their true sacrifices in deference to fallen comrades sorely missed. |

I wish I had a picture to post of my dad in his US Army uniform from World War II. Next time I'm at my mother's house I'll have to remember to scan one. He served as a medical technician and the farthest "overseas" he got was during the war Nova Scotia. But my uncle served in -- and, fortunately, survived -- the Battle of the Bulge. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
