Help me out, who sells a NOS Mullard for $35? The new production Mullards made in the same Russian factory as the new Tung Sol, etc. are around $16.
That's a good analogy you made Lee about preamps/umpires. One thing about great preamps is that you can plug dynamic mics or some so-so diamond in the rough mic (like some MXL) and they'll sound fabulous...whereas you take that same mic into a mediocre preamp and it sounds all hazy and distant.
Conversely, I've heard some great mics in bad preamps and they lose their typical sound. If your send sparking spring water through a dirty rusty hose it doesn't taste so good. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Mine's an older 1402 vlz and the pre has held up perfectly. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

The electrical signal coming out of your microphone is ... well, microscopic. The pre-amp boosts that signal to a level that the next item in your audio chain can use, typically your recording device.
Electronics produce heat, heat shows up as noise on the signal. You will have a tiny bit of noise on your microphone output. The preamp also introduces a tiny bit of noise. A good pre-amp will introduce a minimum amount of noise, while providing a maximum amount of amplification.
A good pre-amp will also have an electrical design that maintains the accuracy of the waveform coming out of the microphone all the way through until it comes out of the pre-amp. A bad design will introduce phase and distortion problems that will make your audio "sound bad".
A pure pre-amplifier only amplifies. A processor adds other functions, like compression, equalization or other sonic treatment.

And, for the survey, I use a JoeMeek ThreeQ, with the EQ and compressor stages bypassed so it runs in "pre-amp only" mode. |

Thanks! So would I be lame if I used a MobilePre USB to connect to my DAW and a PreSonus TubePre to boost the signal? Not saying I do, just hypothetically... _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

You shouldn't need to. The MobilePre USB (which many of my friends have in their road-kits) should provide enough gain by itself. Microphone XLR in, and USB line out to your PC.
If it doesn't provide enough gain, there's something wrong somewhere. |

Amy,
I used to have that exact set-up, or something very like it. Now, I'm using my older Mackie 1402VLZ (hi Mandy) into my M-Audio Fast Track Pro and from there to the computer. _________________ Be well,

So I've got an ART Tube MP. Would I see a noticeable difference if I switched the tube? _________________ Jeff

I think this topic is fantastic and along the lines of: what is your favorite cake? We all have a favorite until we have the luxury of trying another. MMm, if the avalon came in chocolate with buttercream frosting... _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
