Hey Gang

I have a nifty flat-screen monitor I'm using in my new huttie setup— I'm keeping my laptop out of the way because my mic picks up the whir off the hard drive. I have a problem with electrical noise on playback. I get a USB whine and a burrrrrrr of noise as long as ProTools is active.
My PT is going thru the USB, and I normally do not get USB whine on record or playback.

Also— I have been busting my neck to make a quiet recording space and so I have been hoping to make my gate unnecessary, but DANG. I have hiss in my audio chain somewhere. I can't tell if it's the Symetrix 528 channel strip or the Mackie. The Mackie is not completely quiet when I use it by itself, but when I include the 528, the noise gate makes for absolute silence in between the bits of voice talking.
So, I am WTF?!

I need to get an engineer in here, but I don't know anyone nearby!
Edo, when are you going to be in New England?

Hi Deirdre,
It sounds to me like it would more than likely be one of the sections of the Symetrix before the gate. It just depends on how you have it hooked up. If it's Mic > Symetrix > Mackie then the gate would kill the noise before the Mackie. If it's Mic > Mackie > Symetrix (via an insert point or mixer output) then it could be either.
Sorry I'm not more help.
Good luck,
John
