Everything worked dandy yesterday. The only thing I've done to screw around with my computer is try to configure Outlook, which is totally unrelated, I would think.

So, to the problem... this morning, I try to open my October ProTools session (all of my sessions are stored on my external hard drive) and I get this message:

###
This session is saved on a volume set to "Transfer" only.

If permitted, set the volume(s) in question to "P" (Playback) or "R" (Record) in the Workspace.

Otherwise, choose OK to save a copy of this session and its media to a valid playback volume. The session copy will automatically open from the chosen location.

###

So, it wouldn't allow me to open the session and set the "volumes in question" and so I clicked OK to save a copy of the session. I had to save it to my computer hard drive; it wouldn't allow me to save it to the external hard drive.

I can open it from the computer hard drive... and I can open a new session... but I don't want to run/save my sessions from my computer's hard drive. That's why I have the external.

I tried copying it from the computer hard drive to the external, and opening it there, but it will not open from the external. Nor can I start a new session from the external.

Ideas, fine friends?

NEVERMIND!!! I just figured it out!!!!! YAY!!!!

The fix: Go to Window/Workspace, and then change the volume from T to R.

I wonder how it changed to T in the first place though??? I've never been in that screen. Weird.

Hey Caryn,

Yep, the same thing happened to me a week or two ago, I also save all my sessions to an external hard drive. After my wife pulled me off the ledge of our single story dwelling, I took a deep breath and paid attention to what it was telling me and fixed it like you did. Who knows why it happens. I'm getting a bit tired of Pro Tools. For what we do in the voice world, Pro Tools is like taking a 747 Jumbo Jet to the store for a quart of milk (analogy borrowed from another VO pro).

VO great, Beau Weaver, has been pushing Twisted Wave, a new software program developed for VO peeps.

You might try Sound Forge Audio Studio. It's a trimmed down version of the full Sound Forge. Around $70 I think.

Ooo Ooo I Know, I Know!

USB devices can disappear when computers and put to sleep and then rebooted. The net result of this happening to you two is that Windex, not finding the drive it is supposed to have there, assigns a new work drive.

When you are done with the computer. Shut it down. Figure out how your laptop is setup and know what the difference is and what happens when you shut the lid, or hit the power button, or in Vista click on the universal On/Off symbol ( that MS has ambugated by making this button default to making the computer sleep, not turn off). You can program most computers to just sleep or hibernate when you close the lid or hit the power button.

Always start projects from a clean power on, meaning that the system was OFF before you started. My guess is this will make the problem go away...

Also make sure the external drive is powered up before you power up the laptop so it is there when it is looked for..

g'luck!

Vote +1 for Twisted Wave!

Also dig Amadeus Pro (another Mac aHobo Tounge)

In PC land, Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio for $55 can't be beat IMHO.
But it is STRICTLY 2 tracks, can't do multitrack mixing.

I've never understood why so many people swear by ProTools, *unless* of course they are all doing multitrack production...it's one voice into one mic onto one track. While I do use Nuendo for my music productions (http://thefump.com/artist.php?id=11), I've been using Sound Forge for VO for years and it's always been just fine (I'd imagine the AudioStudio version works just as nicely)...of course insert "your Mac stereo editor" here...Is there something I'm missing as to how wonderful PT is for straight, raw VO? Just curious Smile , thanks.

An easy to learn and understand, highly stable recording program that offers a lot of well thought out tools is what we need. I have chosen Goldwave. It comes standard with all the tools you would expect and some that don't seem to be available as standard fare in some of the other programs I have looked at. Whenever there is an update to the program, I can update without charge. Buy it once and updates are free for life. I believe the license also will allow a user to load the program on more than one computer without paying extra. Use it in your home studio and on your laptop when you travel.

I record almost exclusively on one mono track, although I can choose stereo if I want to. Even so, mixing in a few sfx and or two or three different music elements really is not difficult if one is organized and thinking about what can be done to accomplish the goal.

I have looked at several others over the years. I have even loaded some of them and tried them out.

I'll stick with Goldwave. I never have problems. Never, as in not ever.

I find ProTools just fine for me...so far. I also have Goldwave, which is especially handy for using on the road and for auditions, when I don't feel like hauling the M-Box. Goldwave is also very inexpensive, and stable. I still haven't learned all its features, and there are many. I especially enjoy the easy batch conversion capability- great for converting those e-learning files to vox, or 22050 wav PCM, etc.
By the way, Don, you are a treasure trove of helpful info on Goldwave. Smile
