|
|
I notice on the back of the Firewire card for the Mackie Onyx series mixers there are 2 firewire jacks. This unit can do 16 channels simultaneously so I'm assuming there are 8 channels of audio per jack. Can I use 2 computers with the 2 jacks as separate I/O for 2 workstations or do they both have to go to one workstation?
Anyone have experience with this mixer? I've got the VLZ series now and can get the Mixer and firewire card B-stock for $640... For that price I can clear out the 2 Onyx satellites I'm using as well as the VLZ 1402, a bluebird, and a few other things... |

Don't have direct experience, but I believe you'll find each of the two firewire ports sends all 16 channels (plus a stereo mix). _________________ --Michael

I have a Mackie Onyx 1220 with a Firewire card. My understanding is that there are potentially 16 channels although I only really use one. The website says you can daisychain a couple together to give 32

The 1220 is a lovely wee mixer. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

Most Firewire devices have two connectors because it's basically a pass-through as well as a connector. You can connect several devices together and to your computer and they will all work independently with your computer. However I've discovered that those are powered connections meaning that if you've daisy chained 4 devices together and you want to use #4, if #3 isn't "on", #4's signal won't get through to your computer.
This from a non-techie, but a regular user.

Not meaning to change the subject....Is Apple diminishing its use of Firewire?
The new MacBooks and pro have less FW access. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

It seems like Apple has often gone the way of simplifying their products, even removing features, in surprising ways. It's not too much of a surprise that they want people to buy a Macbook Pro, so they force the hands of the Firewire users. But why have ONE SIZE to choose from? It still burns my butt that the new units still have only 2 USB ports, there are so many times where 3 are useful. 1- Mbox 2- iLok 3- Verizon EVDO modem
Bottom line is with Apple, as always, wait and see... It's never prudent to jump on a new generation of any Apple product until they've been properly beta tested by their customers. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Oh now...if thats all, just buy a nice keyboard and you can fit all three of your USB devices. Problem solved. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

Then I'd buy an iMac. For portability and carrying less junk in your bag, and reliability (USB hubs SUCK), 3 ports help tremendously. If a $300 Asus EEE PC can have 3 USB ports, AND an SD card reader.... Just sayin'! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I agree with George. No firewire is a deal breaker for me. I hear the iMac is getting the next overhaul in November? And (fingers crossed) maybe even the Mini? |

Casting aspersions!?!... You will take what the mac people give you and you will like it.. It is different and it is Mac, so it MUST be good....
<rant>
OK.. , fine Mac has a great platform for many things...
Is there a power SWITCH?
Is there and EJECT button for the optical drive?
Any chance of a secondary ( or tertiary mouse button)?
The above three have driven me nutso for years, and I still can;t find a logical reason to nit include these feature...
and more USB ports!!
However, Mac DOES have the power cord thing down. As a PC tech for way to long, snapped power connectors on laptops was a very common and very expensive problem.
I just don't get the price premuim for a mac.. yes they *CAN* be more stable for many reasons, but then so can a PC.... They say MS is bad and wants to rule the world ( uhm yeah right), however if we switched their dominace roles which would you rather have..??

OK, I PROMISE I won't let this turn into a PC vs. Mac discussion, as I know it is strictly verboten!
Interestingly, Apple is SLOWLY warming up to the fact that there is a good reason for more than one button on a Mouse. The Mighty Mouse actually has FOUR of them. There is a left click, and right click, a side click, and the tiny trackball in the center is also a button. I happen to like this mouse very much since you can scroll up/down as well as left/right while editing and zooming.
Plus, the new "buttonless" trackpad on the Macbooks behaves like a left and right click mouse. Click it on the left half and it's left click, right and it's right click. The entire pad is the button and it physically "clicks" like a button when pressed.
Most new PC's now don't actually have more than a soft power switch anymore like the Macs (except some have a toggle on the power supply). As for the eject button, that took me a long time to get used to, but on a PC that button is actually a soft button as well and it won't open the drive when is busy anyhow. You can eject disks by holding F12, pressing eject on Apple keyboards, right click on the disc and choose eject, press the eject button next to the disc in the Finder sidebar, or drag the disk to the trash. That's several additional ways that a PC can't eject discs.
OK, Jowillie's threadjack complete... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

OK, here's the icing on the cake, the mother of all Mac vs. PC battles.
WARNING: Cheesy blood and gore abounds (think 70's Kung Fu movies)
