As far as I can tell, this site is non-partisan - and a very interesting way to formalize your own personal views on the issues of the day. You can spend a lot of time here - perhaps a bit more productively than our physics experiments. (Keep that link active for after the election!)

It first asks you to put a point value on the most important issues to you. Then it asks a series of questions based on that ranking of the issues. Then it presents the candidates that most line up with your beliefs. But the interesting thing is the drill down from that point (and the drill down is important due to the nature of statistics). You can see specifically how you compare on each question - and then read the quotes and votes from each candidate.

Then go back to square one and re-rank your issues - say immigration is now worth 4 points to you instead of 5 and you decide to give the extra point to the Environment. The next set of questions will change slightly and watch what happens to who you line up with.

But the bottom line for me is really thinking about the issues.

Thanks, Connie. I've taken these kinds of quizzes before. They're good because they force people to consider what they really know enough about or don't know and understand enough about to have an intelligent opinion. It is the responsibility of all citizens to be educated on complicated topics, to read and research as a life long habit -- to get information not only from sound bites and headlines from sources that share your biases (we all have them), but from an in depth study of what is important to you, and of what is good for our entire country of diverse individuals, and the whole human family.

And had to laugh -- when I take these things, it always comes out that the closest in agreement with my views is a third party candidate -- but luckily this time, the candidate I'm voting for was second.

Connie, it's one thing to vote for the person who matches most closely -- but pragmatically, and since it was a very close percentage point difference from first to second, I am going with the candidate who has a chance to win. Though I know how sometimes one party LOVES you to vote a third party. It may be idealistic, but it's just not smart.

No, no -- not wanting to vote for the winner, just wanting the person closest to my views that CAN win to be the winner -- there's a big difference. Otherwise you may end up giving the election to the one furthest from your views. And that wouldn't be smart, would it? Point for point on my three top issues, we were in total agreement. But I already knew that since I have been paying close attention to the issues for quite some time. And I would never say I told you so to all those who voted for a very unpopular president -- that would just be mean! Fun quiz format, though. Thanks again for posting it.

I still can't believe the people who don't want to vote because they don't see a difference between the candidates or they think the country will end up about the same. I think these are people who really don't care/know about history or really care/know about world/national events and how they affect themselves.

Like these guys or not, Bill Clinton and George Bush made undeniable changes in how things have been run in our country and in our relations with the rest of the world during each of their eight year terms. Who do you want making decisions on your behalf for the next eight years?

If you study the two main candidates for any length of time they have clearly different management techniques (how were their campaigns run?), clearly different views of our future relations with the world, and they have some very different visions on domestic issues, many that will affect you.

To be fair, Presidents are not the end-all and be-all of our government. We are run by three different branches. The President only has one-third of the power (but what a third that can be!).

Congress has a third of the power, but why on Earth, when they have a 17% approval rating do we return 90% of them to Washington each year? AT LEAST as important as your vote for President is your vote for your member of Congress and your Senator (if they're up for re-election this cycle). Maybe this is the year we throw the bums out? I'm not holding my breath.

The third third of our government is the Courts. Several major decisions that will affect you are on the horizon. The President selects most of the judges for the major Federal courts of our land. Who do you want appointing our next justices and judges? That should give you a reason to pick a candidate right there.

To those on the fence, please study a little more, make a decision and vote. You may find out later some votes were not the best choices, but at least you took an action that shows that you care about your future, our future.

Amen to that, Bruce.

It's easy to wave a flag or cheer a candidate, presidential or congressional, based on superficial knowledge, but to do the homework necessary for wise decision making, we need to put in the time and attention. This is no sporting event. It's work, yes. But the country will only be as good as its decision makers, and that would be all of us. In the end, we get the government we deserve.

Gee, I wish more Canadians had read Bruce's post before yesterday's federal elections here. We had a dismal voter turnout - something like 59% which is really unacceptable.
