Email received this morning from a company on behalf of a client who was in turn acting on behalf of a client.

Badly written script for broadcast use. With different tags the script would serve as two commercials. As this was a record and send job I thought while I record I'll ask "for use where?"

It turns out that it was for use on two TV commercials in the UK and .....
"only regional, the client thinks sort of Newcastle area". So someone has shot a TV commercial, edited the material and changed captions to make 2 TV commercials and only "thinks it may be on .....". I assume they only sort of remember getting the commercial checked by the BACC (they check ad's for legal reasons) and have a vague memory of talking to someone about buying air time some where or other ....................OH! They do know it's definitely going to be on air over a 3 day period. Nice they know something.

Why am I telling you this? The budget agreed by the company hiring me on behalf of the client who was acting on behalf of the client was for round figures sake $100. By the time I had the "sort of" information I'd already uploaded the audio to a large file server so I sent an email saying I would not invoice because my audio was not to be used, not sort of not to be used but definitely not to be used.

Dang.

This is one of the reasons the unions in this country want the "Mother-may-I" stranglehold on all a talent's dealings— so this doesn't happen.

"Where's it going to be used?" is a question that comes within the same bracket of questions that includes "What's your budget?"

I think @ $100 per airplay you have nothing to complain about, Philip Wink

Grapevine says that client of a client sort of writes checks, too.

Now that you said it's not to be used, how can you enforce that?

It's a self-enforcing script. If they used my audio when the final version is played to the client he'll probably notice that the script was written by someone who has English as their second language.
