About a month ago, around 3am, my one year old son wakes-up. Being the dutiful husband, I volunteer to take him, until he falls back to sleep. (We have all been there.) Flipping the channels to find something that might help the situation, I discover he is riveted by a ballet on PBS' Great Performances. The show ends and on comes Encore! with James Conlon and this is when I sit up and take notice. Mr. Conlon began discussing the mindset of master pianists through the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato. His discussion and examples were so similar to what I have learned over the past three years about voice over; I felt I had to share. Here is an eight minute clip from the show:

After watching, I would love to hear your comments.

p.s. There is some very beautiful music in between the dialogue clips. Enjoy.

Dan,

I thought the Miles Davis quote quite telling, especially for the voice actor ... "not what's on the page, but what's not on the page." Very interesting. Thank you for that link.

I find it refreshing that concepts and ideas about the creative process have been around for millenia, and that they are still so true to what we all do as translators... iow ther eis nothing really all the new...Smile

Great find and share... thanks

Look for Howard Goodalls Big Bang.. a show put out in the UK.. very good episode on the history of music and music structure. A lot to learn there to about interpretation. Utube doesn;t have the episode I am thinking of. I have recently seen this show on the Ovation network.

One "Miles-ism" that I've always liked was his one word to Stanley Clarke the first time they met. "Space".

It's almost hard to visualize, but if Miles Davis were alive today, he'd be 82 years old.

So....there's a piano in that cave? (if you ever studied philosophy, you'll get it)

Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing.
