Try this url: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
This gives a choice of locations such as San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, New York City, and others to choose from fro the test. You do not need to sign up for anything to test your internet speed either.
Do this test at lest three times in your average day to get a consensus about just how fast your connection really is capable of.
Liz, them's some dang good numbers.

Comcast here outside of Chicago:
16856k down
6936k up
DON'T FORGET that Windows Explorer is a very capable, easy-to-use, automatically drag-n-drop FTP interface if you want something free.
Open up Windows Explorer (not IE) and in the Address field, type in this, then hit enter:
ftp://username:password@ftp.siteaddress.com
Where you obviously replace 'username' with your username, 'password' with your password and 'ftp.siteaddress.com' with your FTP site address. Easy peasy.
(not secure, though, unless your FTP site supports SSL and you add an 's' to the end of the first 'ftp')
Like Frank, I also use CuteFTP Pro...great software, not too expensive.
Dan-O, are you SURE it's 56k that you're getting and not 56K - 56K (kiloBYTES) is the same as about 448k (kiloBITS)
And as has been said, your ISP's connection is only part of the equation...if you're sending to a server on a slow network or the server itself is sucky, or bogged down, you'll see reduced speeds.

Lou,
To make a comparison:
Eddie can upload a 250mb file in 15 minutes.
It would take me almost three hours.
Ya'll see my problem? |

Dan-O,
I get 236k UP here in the hills. But it's the best I am able to do at present in my location. So, I feel your pain.
Here is the little marketing trick many of the ISP's use to lure you into buying their services; "Fast broadband internet with speeds up to 15 Meg!"
What they do not tell you is that is usually burst speed and download only. Burst speed translates into approximately 15 seconds of a really fast pipe, then it bogs down to a normal download speed... Aren't they just full of surprises?
There are so many variables as to why you may or may not have some speed, including but not limited to your distance from the main connection, how many other people are on the internet in your area, whether or not you are on a true cable link or DSL assisted cable, and on and on.
All I have to add to this little discussion is: Good luck.

My own website/ftp and studio and ad agencies' ftp servers. Same as everyone else.
Frank, I am searching for FIOS in my area. Thanks! |

Crush FTP...have you looked into it, Dan? Ask Anthony or Kevin for more info. I believe they both have it in action now. I have not got it set up yet since it is best to get another computer to used as your server. It seems like a nice solution for quick FTP action since you can monitor your files and who is downloading etc. Plus the access for your clients is close to instantaneous.
It is on my list to get set-up. Gotta get a dedicated computer so I can set it up as my server. I don't want my main computer also being my server. _________________ Ben

This is a very good question. I know that some applications report the speed in KiloBYTES instead of the commonly used kiloBITS. There is a multiplication factor of 8 involved there. (8 bits in a byte) _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

FileZilla here, too. And as Jeff said, it depends where the receiving server is. Files move pretty fast to servers here in the US. But if they're in India or any other offshore destination, upload rates vary.
I also have my own FTP site with GoDaddy. It's about 10 bucks a year to store 100 Gig. I use it a lot, as many of my clients don't have FTP sites. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Don't feel TOO bad Dan-O - here are my speeds (averaged after 3 speakeasy speed tests):
Download Speed: 16565 kbps
Upload Speed: 484 kbps
My upload has NEVER gone up higher than 500K!!! But my download has always been b/w 15000-17000 kbps! Go figure.
That's why I installed CrushFTP - because most of the trailer houses and other producers are usually under the gun, so at least this way, the files are available immediately after the session - versus them having to wait until I upload it and THEN have it available for them to DOWNLOAD it all over again. No one's complained about the speed... they're just happy that they get an email less than 5 minutes later telling them how to get it.
Let's chat this week.

I'm using Bytes for this since that's the measurement we use for audio files...
I have Cox Cable here and I'm getting insane download speeds close to 3MB per second so a 1MB mp3 downloads in the blink of an eye. Upload on the other hand was limited to 70KB per second so it took forever to upload anything. Recently they must have gone to this "burst" system for uploads: the first 3MB uploads in just a couple of seconds or so and then it quickly slows down to about 110KB, so small uploads are pretty fast and the rest a r e s l o w.
I guess this means I still can't use Source Connect which requires at least 256K upload speed, yes?
I'm using plain old Cute FTP for Mac and it works great.
