Just got a locatization to do for Saks Off Fifth and it has a couple of names I don't know off the top of my head.
Sagtikos State Parkway - Sag-TEE-cose? Sag-te-cos - with little or nothing on the "ti" and a bit more on the Sag.
Deer Park LIRR Train Station. Is the acryonym said Leer? _________________ Playing for a living...

LIRR = Long Island Railroad... I think it's said L - I- double R. I've never hear "leer" or anything else.
Can't help with the other one though. For some reason, when I looked at it, I thought it was spelled incorrectly though... prolly cause it doesn't look familiar. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Caryn's absolutely right about LIRR, which I've also heard it as L-I-R-R. But, then again, I'm a Manhattan rat, so I defer to others.
As to Sagtikos, sorry, no help here. I'm only vaguely familiar with it as The Sag.
And ... of course ... AAARGH ('til midnight). _________________ --Michael

Sag-TUH-kohs. Check your e-mail.
Caryn's right. It's L-I double R. Although some say L-I-R-R. Both are correct.
As a (now former) NY traffic reporter with Long Island stations on my schedule I always used L-I double R. |

Hey, I road tested in the Bronx too! Down by Soundview I think. It was a long time ago. lol...
In LA last month I was amazed at how nice driving was. I'd heard it was bad but (maybe it was the Washington plates on my rental? go figure) it was actually relaxing. Polite drivers. I had to keep reminding myself to uh.....dial it down a bit.
But I will never, ever get used to standing on a street corner when there is NO traffic at all anywhere and waiting for the light to change before crossing. |

REQUIRED NOTICE: ...THREADJACKING CONTINUES...
Yup, Caryn, I completely understand! Have you noticed the challenge it is for many to believe one can comfortably live in NYC without a car?
Impressive, Liz! But have you tried Boston?(Without any ill will to the residents/fans of that fine city)
Melissa, could you please further explain why one waits to cross whether there is or isn't traffic? _________________ --Michael

I have no idea why one would wait. Or I didn't until I was warned.
All I know is that the first couple of days I was in LA I would cross the street when there was no traffic, or when traffic was far enough away so that I knew I had enough time. I did notice that people were standing at the corner while I was crossing but I figured they were on the phone or otherwise distracted. And I couldn't figure out why people were pushing buttons to get the light to change. We New Yorkers KNOW those things haven't worked in decades.
Then someone told me I would get ticketed for jaywalking. For real. Not a joke. And that you HAD to wait for the light - as absurd as it seems. And the buttons DO work!
Immediate culture shock. |

ummmm do you drive through red lights when there is no traffic? If you did, you'd get a ticket. Why should it be any different when walking?
That being said, it didn't take me long to adopt the New York pedestrian's predilection while I was there not long ago You know, when in New York.... But I never really felt comfortable with it. _________________ Elaine

I guess you have to grow up with it!
I remember as a kid there was this whole campaign "Cross at the green, not in between"...but most people took that as a reminder to cross at the cross walk, not in the middle of the block!....I just can't wait at a crosswalk for the green light when there are no cars coming...NYC-DNA I guess!
(it drives my DH crazy BTW!)

Okay, so the light says you can go but there is a car coming and it ain't stopping and it ain't slowing down. Gonna walk out there and expect 'em to stop? |
