I've got a piece of audio recorded in an auditorium. I'd like to try to remove some of the cavernous quality. What can I do? I'm on Adobe Audition 1.5 with Izotope Ozone. Can anyone help?

The only thing I could think of doing would be to gate out the obvious echoes based on volume. But that would take a feat of audio engineering wizardry to ride all the peaks and valleys the audio will have.

Too much work! You know what? I'm just leaving it. I'll fix what really needs to be fixed and leave the echo. Smile

Amy,

As you might imagine with all of the large arenas and stadiums where Mr. Graham has spoken through the years, we deal with this all the time at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. As far as I know, there is no audio processing that will make any useful difference.

Well, why the heck NOT - you can ADD room noise just by clicking on a preset! By gosh you should be able to get RID of it the same way! (Beating drum loudly for my friend in her hour of need.)

Connie,

You're right. It would be very simple, assuming you have a preset that exactly matches the sonic characteristics of the room in question. And the voice of the speaker. Trivial matter in that case.

If you're using Adobe Audition or Cool Edit Pro 2 you can click effects, then click noise reduction and grab a sample of the "room noise". Then it will instruct you to take a sample of the noise you want to eliminate. Once you do that, you highlight the entire recording and click the tab to remove noise. It will eliminate only that noise. There's some minor distortion. But it will vary. Sometimes it will sound great, other times it won't.

From time to time when I'm doing longer narration work the dang AC will kick in and I find myself with a line or two that I have to clean up.

I know my tutorial is short, but if you're using that software, give me a ring and I'll walk you through it.

I was sort of kidding - but I also use noise reduction on occasion. But isn't this a lot different than noise?

I'm sort of curious now to try to reduce a boomy room with filters.

Drew, that would work if there was a constant room noise. But in Amy's case, she's got echo which only occurs when the user speaks. There's no way to get an isolated sample of that noise for the noise reduction algorithm.

Right. I had already done noise reduction, and that helped. Everything was clearer without the hum of the room. But I don't think accommodating for the echo and general acoustics of the room is possible, without some major magic that I don't possess. I'm calling it good enough!

It seems to sound a little better with the addition of Connie's drum.

(Thank you Drew-- you are so sweet to offer to help me over the phone. Honestly, you are a doll!)

Toaster Oven / Microwaves! Now that's what I want! Think of the space you'd save.
