I was in the south of Essex, UK for 22 years. Same result.

Sure, someone else will end up doing it, but I'm with Frank....at the end of the day I have to look at myself in the mirror, and if I feel smarmy about the product and my association with it, an hour-long shower won't make me feel any cleaner, and neither will the money.
OK, that was 3-cents

Your 2-cents, plus 3-cents, makes common sense. Like the song says... if I can remember the words... " If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."

That probably explains me too.

As far as the morals thing, and stuff you believe in goes, I guess I'm different.

I could definately voice stuff I don't agree with. I've had to for years in radio. For example, my stance on abortion doesn't decide if I will voice a pro-choice or pro-life commercial. Why should it? 1. I'm paid to act, so that's what I'm going to do. 2. Our country is based, among other things of coures, on freedom of speech and group XYZ has the right to push their message. As long as they push it in a manner that won't soil my reputation then I'm fine with working with the dirty hippies.

Mike- That little girl of your is growing! Wow.

Great comments and points being made.

I think radio and voiceovers are two different animals. For me, no matter how many years I was in radio, the advantage of doing voiceovers now that I get to say yes and no. In my environment it's on a client by client basis, not the "you work for the station and its your job to cut any commercials we give you" one.

Morality aside, is anyone still bothered by stupidity? Like, do you ever feel sheepish after putting your voice to a really mind-numbingly moronic piece of copy?

I think Mike's training his daughter in martial arts already. In this picture Yuuyu looks like she's in a stance getting ready to kick some ass.

Ooo-ooh, Thanks Bill.

You took the words right out of my mouth... or at least my keyboard.

It really does come down to your moral values. If you really want to work for an opressive regime - and NEED the money, you will likely sell your soul to the devil. If you are independent and have the Integrity to say what you will do and DO it, then your level of morality will come through.

I worked in radio for many years, I developed values when I left that world in favor of my personal self. I was dependent on no-one else, I either made it or not based upon what my skills, talents, and core values (or morals) were.

I just recently turned down a great gig which would have been on-going; because I did not believe the client's credit handling was up-and-up.

A member of my family had dealings with the company, and their handling of the situation was horrid. It was not explained nor written in the disclosure what their real policy was... so I turned down the gig. Was I stupid? Probably. But the client is now doing their best to fix and improve on their public verification of their credit offerings. They also are continuing to pester me to work for them in the future... (I am still higher priced then they want to pay.)

My values (morals) kept me from doing the job, but my values are serving others in the fact that the company is now choosing to disclose all their credit offerings.

If I had been in radio and the client approached, what could I have done... quit?

Make your choices wisely and make your stand. I have lately been commented about as being "a Voice Talent with morals". Don't know yet whether it's a compliment or a slur, time will tell. However, I stand by this description of myself.

It doesn't bother me now... but at the time... my friends who heard the commercial kept refering to me as the "chicken man".

Hey, the "Chicken Man" is still famous! Heard on Xm Satelitte and numerous stations across the U.S. and available on the internet...

It's ChickenMan, it's ChickenMan!

This seems like Deja Vu - did'nt I already tell this story? Anyway, several years ago, I received an emergency call from my agent in San Diego asking me to report to the studio I had been in the day before as soon as I could possibly make it. I went without asking what the spot was and she didn't volunteer, 'cause the phone was ringing. I just assumed that it was a redo of the car spot from earlier.

As I pulled into the lot, I was met by the producer who shoved the copy in the window - before I had a chance to get out of the car. I read the spot on my way to the door and by the time I got there I had to tell the producer that I would'n't be able to do the spot.

It was a very nasty mud-slinging spot near the end of a heated and increasingly antagonistic mayoral campaign. I was neither for nor against this particular candidate at that point in time, but I simply could not read that script.

I got the usual "You'll never work in this town again" stuff from the campaign manager, but I apologized and left the studio.

As I was leaving the lot, the engineer drove in - it was lunch time and he had run out to grab something while waiting for me to arrive. He asked me where I was going and I told him that I couldn't do the spot. He said, "Oh, you're the second one." Now I knew why it was such a last minute thing!

I heard the spot the next day done by the next person that they could find who would do it - and it wasn't a professional.

A very unusual situation, but I sure learned to always ask about the project before a session starts. Of course, I still might not have seen the script and perhaps the same thing would have happened even if I had know it was a political spot for such and such a candidate.

As an earlier post said - probably the best thing to do is stay away from local political stuff - specially if you have a recognizable sound.

Hugs,

That's one of the reasons why I've severely limited the number of auditions I do at I.V. Most of the scripts are okay, but some of them are grammatical nightmares.

Stupid copy. And yet again, I feel the need to say:

"so for all your hot dog needs...."
