Hey Everyone,

Alas, I have yet another question. I have a game audition coming up where the character has to yell words at a fighting match. So far I've taken the advice of speaking from an axis, and stepping further away from the mike. However I end up sounding like I'm in a box. When I'm performing anime characters that have to yell the engineers always tell me that they turn the mike down.

Since I'm using soundforge does this mean I turn down sound with the software or with the PreSonus Inspire that I use?

Any other ideas?

Thanks guys!

Use a C-12.

No, the real answer is HARDWARE. Turning you head away from, but still into the microphone's pickup pattern can work, depending upon how high your preamp gain is set. IF too high and you hear cracking (from over modulation), then lower the gain a touch until you can do your part without the over modulation.

Hope that helps.

Toodles

Yep!!

Do what Pat Fraley calls the One O'Clock Scream:

Quote:
Back up about 6 inches from the mic and, thinking of the microphone as 12:00, turn your head to 1:00 and let loose. If you need to be more ON axis or in the mic pattern, go to 12:30. If you need to be more OFF axis go to 1:30 to accomplish the task.

This is a great question for many of us in general. Hardware is always the answer b/c you'll still be too loud at the mic with the software adjusted. It's all about following the audio chain so, like Frank said, go for the gain next and then you still have a little play with the fader if you need to adjust that. I like the idea of the one o'clock scream, too.

I'm new here so I don't have much credibility yet (if I ever will Sarcastic ) but I'm also an audio engineer and have this bit of audio geek aura to me. Can you feel it?

This is where a good pad will help as well.
What kind of mic are you on?

Certain mics, like the MD421, LIVE for this kind of work. You could scream yourself mute before you'd clip that mic.

Other mics like the Solaris, AKG Perception 220, and MANY others have a switch which will reduce the gain on the mic somewhere between 10 and 20dB. Some of the more expensive mics like the C414 will have a variable pad.

Used in conjunction with the other tips here, should help give you a little more headroom whilst recording.

Awesome advice everyone! Thanks so much for your time. To answer one's question, I use an Audio Technica AT4047 Condenser Mic

Take care All!

If it's a common occurrence, I'd look at another mic. One that can handle higher SPLs (the TLM103 is popular with the anime crowd for a reason).

Otherwise, the aforementioned advice will do the trick. One addition though, many microphones have a 10dB pad... feel free to use it in situations like this.
