I've been trying to find the best copy holder to provide my clients, and it's not been easy. I am thinking something that mounts to the desktop or wall and can be positioned as needed.

If you want maximum utility, I recommend an LCD touch screen, but for portable use, I find these things to be the best bang for the buck.

Hi George.
I've gone paperless use a computer screen. I like word docs cuz I can mark and highlight right on screen as I work.

Were you thinking about remotes or in your studio?

I am trying to get more and more VO peeps reading copy from their computer screens. I have clients that have an entire Staples paper aisle on their desk at the end of the year, it's insane.
However, for those that still prefer reading from paper (or still get most of their copy sent by fax), I need something that will fit in a small booth or closet.

How small a space are we talking?

BTW: That jazz stand doesn't take up much space.

If they've got a computer screen in there with them, it might just be worth grabbing one of those Belkin paper holders which affix to the side of the monitor.

For proper eye level of my monitor I have it up on a little 7" high shelf unit, and on the L-shaped base of the monitor (a Mac cinema screen) I have laid down a paperback book, and in the middle of that book I have two 16 penny nails sticking heads out about an inch and a half, and I take my copy and rest it on the nails and on the screen. Works great. Cost: 4 cents.

However, these days about 98% of my copy is read off the screen. I can edit copy changes on the fly with no squiggly pencil lines all over the page!

I'm on my way to saving a tree...at least two large branches so far.

The ultimate copy holder? The human hand. While virtually all of my copy reading has been off a flat screen monitor for years now (including faxed copy as I receive the faxes via my computer), on the increasingly rare occastion that I'm in a remote studio and have more than a page of copy, I prefer to hold it in my hands. Much easier to turn the pages silently that way. I use my free hand for gestures, when necessary.

how about the good old, trusty, black Hamilton music stand with the clip on orchestra pit tube light? That'll set you back about $75 bucks total.
I've yet to walk into a studio that doesn't have one at the ready for the voice talent, singer, or musician. It's like the mousetrap...
no one has invented a better one yet.... just add a heavy cloth place mat for reflection absorbtion and you've got it "covered" .... Smile

Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone. Sometimes, strike that, USUALLY simply is better! When I am hired to create a solution I like to make it look like I have some secret knowledge to provide, Laugh
I LOVE to hear that so many of your are reading your copy from the computer screen. If only more of my clients would get used to that idea. Maybe if I show them how easy it is to put the copy in a Word or Pages document and make changes on the fly, they'll be more apt to try this.

I use a heavy sweater that I couldn't stand to part with. Now I get to see it every day!

You know, I'm excited to build my new studio and finally put a screen in there to read from. For years I held the paper but as sessions got longer and longer (and I NEVER sit down) I knew I needed a stand. Standard music stand.

I do have concerns about those that have their laptop right there...how do they isolate that noise out? I've yet to hear a vo that can do a good job of that. But I guess that's for a different thread - Sorry!

I want to go to the computer screen, but the way my studio is configured, it's not in the right place...and the thought of tearing everything down to re-do it is too daunting.

But....I know the day is coming...

In the meantime, I use something much like your first link, George.

BTW, so sorry I didn't find the time to really sit and talk with you at VOICE. Rain check?

Courvo... why not just use a smaller LCD in the booth, or wherever you're recording and split the signal to both screens?

Or extend the desktop screen (if you're comfortable)

or...

use a remote access aHobo Tounge (or Windows/Mac proprietary RPC aHobo Tounges if you're comfortable) with an EEE PC (or similar size device) and use that.

They're small enough and light enough to also be viable.

/enjoys his touch screen interface, and recommends it to all.

I'm low tech. I just take a T pin and use it to pin my copy to some Auralex. But the new studio I'm now designing (finally!) will have a monitor in the booth so I may go paperless too. We'll see.

i may eventually try the laptop route when my daughter moves up to her next and i inherit her current model. but i've always worked better with paper. i can make notes faster, i can reposition it for sightlines better.

more importantly, i also do a lot of audio production where mine is not the voice in the booth. not having a music/copy stand for my guest "vocalists" would be a major inconvenience, especially when someone comes in to do a long-form script. usually, i don't see that copy in advance of the session.
