FWIW, and respectfully George, I know you now a lot more than I do on this ... my experience was trouble-free and took mere seconds to be off and running with it. (Mic Port Pro)
And I have Windows _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

I just established a dealership with CEntrance to sell the MicPort Pro, that's how much I love it! I was showing it off at VOICE2008, which might be why you are hearing about it now. Yoda tested mine there. No, it's not an Avalon, or a RADAR, it is an affordable and practical unit for on the go use. I am using it in my new VO2GO system...
PLUG ALERT
If you buy it through me, it might take a little longer for it to arrive, but I will give you plenty of one on one support to deal with some of the quirks of this unit, such as driver setup in Windows. Heck, if you don't buy it from me I'll still help ya out |
No, it's not an Avalon, and it doesn't do AD/DA like a RADAR or an Aurora, or a Burhl.
But George is dead on for what it does do, and I was surprised by how well it does work.
I like it enough, that I may have to snag one for my own VO2Go kit in the next few months (need to find an appropriate mic for usage). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

George, I would have totally bought from you if it weren't for the tax-free weekend thing here! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

I just got an Apogee Duet and plan to do a shootout sometime soon to compare the mic pres and AD converters. Nothing scientific, just record my voice and listen. I won't be too surprised if I can't hear much of a difference. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

you know George, there's a few people who have CDs which do that too.
Might save you some time.
(remember this is coming from the guy who spent close to 6+ hours listening to AD/DA units before settling on the one for use in my personal room... there were only four I was testing... so I understand the need to test things out for yourself) _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

George,
Arrrrrgggghhhh. The Apogee Duet is, well, ugly.
Have fun, but don't be too surprised when you have major trouble hooking it up, and making it sound - almost good. Mac oriented, limited interfaces, limited I/O's (x2), limited quality, limited all around, not PC friendly. Need I go on?
Pricey at $495.00 USD (quote Musicians Friend, Sweetwater, etc.). For the price I could buy 4+ MicPortPro's. For the quality, I could buy a SoundBlaster with more functionality.
Can you tell I am not an Apogee Duet fan? What was your first clue?

O.K., Yoda, I do not like the product.
I have been forced to write a second review for a publication, and was told not to quote myself from my first review.
Now, here on the VO-BB, a third...
Simply put "the Duet is not User friendly".
Did that state my opinion sufficiently?

Jowillie, check out 3db and chat with those folks. They've been doing it for years.
Frank, I'm with you on this, but on the flip side, their Big Ben is kinda kick-a$$ for the cost. I'm still waiting to test out an Antelope though (what I've heard is sick).
Thankfully, they're not a whole lot of use for VO (there's already enough gear out there to temp our wallets). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Interesting, what use would you have for the Big Ben or the Antelope in the VO world?
The only real difference I discern between Big Ben and Antelope is in Antelope's "World Clock", which is something which holds no real value in an single audio studio environment doing VO.
World clock is frequently used in the digital telephony world to sync multiple switches and digital trunks where correct timing is critical across a world network environment. In video a world clock is also near useless unless you have a VERY large network to edit across.
Have fun!

Ever try it?
I'm with you that it's overkill in the VO world, but it has an interesting effect on the AD/DA even on a single channel. With the Burhl, the sound became more musical. With an Aurora it became a little "tighter" (can't describe it really). The lower end became more pronounced, which surprised the heck out of me.
Like I said, it's overkill for a single track, but put everything together in the mix and I could see some use for it, particularly if you're doing your own music beds.
Doesn't fit my needs though. The clock in my AES16 is just fine for now. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I bought my M.P.P close to a year ago, I remember connecting it for the first time and being amazed that I could open my DAW and start recording almost instantly, without changing any settings or downloading drivers. Seriously, it's that plug-and-playable.
After installing Source Connect a few weeks ago, I noticed pop/click/static noise problems that Source Elements and I have since determined to be caused by the M . Initially, downloading the CEntrance Universal Driver from their website made Source Connect usable with minimal noise interference thankfully, but didn't totally fix the issues. Now in addition, when Source Connect is closed, recording and editing audio has gotten a lot worse in terms of digital noise. Ditching the universal driver and rolling back the laptop would make this probably go away, but then Source Connect would be noticably worse and having that program available is priority #1 for me.
To their credit, both Source Elements and CEtrance tech support have been genuinely interesting in finding the source of the problem and hopefully working toward a fix. Seemlingly, I'm the only guy who's run into these particular issues so everyone else should be safe with the M .
Oh, and George rocks. _________________ Joe Szymanski
