SO, now that I am starting to move forward, I am wanting to set up a small business for my VO work. Any tips or websites with good info on what to do first, second..and so on?
Also, LLC, S Corp, or sole proprietorship?
(I hope this is in the proper forum)

Hey, Kasey. I had many of the same issues.

Check with your local city or town's website to see what sort of things they offer to support small businesses. You'll probably have to file something with them (and for now, and probably always since you're one person go SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP) to make it legit for a bank. I simply downloaded the business form from my city's site, filled in the info, had it notarized then filed it with the bank. Really easy, especially if you're just using your own name.

Also try entrepreneur.com. You may find some really helpful things there.

I hope this info helps!

Before deciding on the type (i.e.: LLC, Sole Prop., S Corp, C-Corp, etc.) consider spending a few minutes digesting the thoughts of a good accountant. Not an Attorney.

Your accountant will be able to advise you on this choice in a manner which will help your business grow. An attorney can only operate on your directions, not offer you advice about your business.

Your bank may also be a good resource.

A Sole-Prop. offers you zero protection from liability. A Partnership can be a unique form of doing business which limits liability, but offers no real protection from creditors. An LLC, as it's name implies, offers limited liability.

How big will your "small business" grow? What kinds of liability protection do you need? Will you have partners or investors?

O.K., business forms are a specialized area where you need to do the research to find the proper information.

Setting up your business is a good step in the right direction.

Write a "Business Plan" today. This will help you determine your needs and wants, how your business will grow, what issues to be aware of in your chosen market, and how to operate your business in the near future.

Good luck.

Toodles

I second Frank's advice...when we were trying to decide the same issues, we talked to a really good accountant; we'd been sole prop for years, but were tired of the self-employment tax eating us alive; everybody's situation is different, so talk to the accountant first...

You're right there. Funny 'cause we were just talking about if we should change but our accountant wasn't any help so I know I have to kick it into gear and find a new one. Where would be be w/out an accountant?!!?
