Greetings fellow voice-trekkers. Sorry I don't get 'round here as much as I'd like to contribute, but I browse often and enjoy everyone's well seasoned perspectives.

I've got a rather unique project involving myself and another talent which i need to quote a non-union rate for. I would welcome some advice.

Client's end-product will be a retail-marketed recipe book consisting of up to 45 individual "dishes" and my part of this, together with a "co-host" will be to serve as talent for companion CD(s) that will accompany the printed 'book' of recipes/ingredients. For each recipe, we providing an audio 'walk-through'/step-by-step dialogue of the cooking process - from start to finish - ala Food Network or a Martha Stewart segment - albeit in a much more condensed format-configured so the listener can stop/re-start the companion disc as they follow along in the kitchen.
(sorry if this sounds like some wacky V123 casting call so far but the intentions are good - just wanted to give some sense of the nature of the project; )

Annyway. We estimate each segment at roughly 4to5 finished mins..
I have a studio partner on this who'll bill session time separately at an hourly rate.
We estimate 1 to 1.5 hours session time per script.

I'm trying to arrive at a fair buyout rate Per Script - on behalf of both myself and the other talent, which factors in the retail end-usage. This'll
be sold in stores.. and ultimately may wind up as a downloadable entity - which may invoke a whole 'nother rate variable to be considered...

For starters, my inclination is to reference the closest matching AFTRA category is that would apply (any thoughts? 'Sound Recordings' or...?) Then, figure the per-script rate at 2-hours session time per script... I just don't want to short-change ourselves given the retail/merchandising aspect.

Any food for thought appreciated and
Top o'the Muffin to Ya,

MikeE

$600 per voice nominal half day rate plus 300% for the buyout. The half day rate means if you get the script done in 50 mins you're up o the deal and if you go over 2 hours no one cares as no one is clock watching.

Hi Phillip, thanks for your suggestion.

If i encounter some resistance and am pressed for a union rate-card reference to support any proposal I'm still a bit uncertain as to which category this project logically falls under.

If we're talking aftra, i'm not sure it's technically in the realm of a Cat.II narration vs. say, "sound recordings" or 'audiobook' for that matter.

Just looking to be prepared with some form of substantiation for the numbers, especially when itemizing the add-in percentage for the buyout.

I am a bit concerned that the client may be taken aback at this kind of figure "per-script," and could counter with something to the effect that these are are all part of a "set" - as opposed to each separate script being made available individually on a per-piece basis - and given the quantity, perhaps client would be looking for a lower per-piece price - perhaps not! Just trying to conceive of an Option if that became a sticking point.

Thanks again for your thoughts and to any others who may weigh in on this,

Mike
