OK here is a picture of my setup...I am still waiting on an adjustable mic boom arm and don't have my "self-engineered portable audio absorption device" in the scene, but I am sure the picture is better without it.
Shure SM7 with a Behringer Xenyx 1204 and a Behringer MDX1600 Processor (mounted into my self-engineered audio equipment holding device) into my little Emachine with Adobe Audition 1.5

Still tweaking the sound but here is a small clip...any suggestions about the compression settings will be appreciated as I am trying to get the most transparent sound with the device because I can not afford a sound booth at this time and can't get a good clean audio signal. The compressor was my last effort to get a nice quiet sound.
This is just a test _________________ Does life start at 40? |

I've got a feeling you will want to get the mic far away from the rest of your gear and computer...even though it's a dynamic, it will pick it all up. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I move the mic when recording. It sits up there so the rugrats dont get a hold of it...

let's also try it with no compression, if what I thought I heard you say was indeed what you said |
If I bypass the processor, I will get a huge amount of background noise. The main reason I went with the processor was to remove the background noise so I didnt need to build a studio or invest in a whisper room.
I will do an "A" "B" comparison later today after work.

It's much better to minimize the noise prior to recording than try to take it out during/after. |

Kasey,
You might want to search the archives for posts regarding acoustics/room treatment. There are a lot of good and affordable ideas and suggestions for minimizing noise, etc. without breaking the bank.
Having a dynamic mic is a plus in my opinion, given your situation. That in itself will minimize to a certain extent the extraneous little noises that would otherwise be picked up by a condenser mic.
WhisperRooms are great(I invested in one recently) but I worked out of a converted closet for 2 years before getting one. |

Bingo, not to mention that in your clip you stated that the sound we were hearing is unprocessed.
It's not. More can be learned by analyzing the clean signal than the compressor in this situation. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I think you might be confused of who posted what...my audio file was processed and I believe that I stated that in the clip...at any rate...I will do a side by side comparison later...I failed to mention that I will be using this setup to do some live broadcasting as well so I dont think having a whisper room would be adventageous for me as I will need to broadcast from in front of the PC. _________________ Does life start at 40? |

You make the statement at the end of the clip that whatever sound is coming from the mic is what we're hearing.
As soon as you use processing of any sort, that answer is not correct, which is why I had the confusion.
Let's do an A/B here and see what we can. Your noise issue might be easier to fix than you think. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

AHHHH now I see what you were referring to... I should be home in a couple of hours to do the side by side...I appreciate your input.
So is it not recommended to use processing when doing reads then?
When would it be appropriate to use processing?
Obviously I can use it when I do my live broadcasting and podcasting as that wont be for a client. _________________ Does life start at 40? |
