The time for a new OS is here. The question, which Vista? I ran the Vista advisor tool and it came up with the business version. If I go with the business version is there anything I would be missing that might be necessary for voice talkin in the Ultimate version?
I use this one computer for everything. However, I am not connected to my TV. Future plans will involve a larger flat screen in the studio but that will be hooked up via sattelite. Unless there is some reason I need to connect it to my computer. My understanding of Ultimate is that is gives you the ability to control media? Any input from you computer wiz people would be very much appreciated. |

my experience...for what it's worth:
get the biggest, fastest, most powerful computer you can buy...loaded with as much memory as you can stuff in. because vista is going to suck every ounce of it and making running any other program at the same time darn near impossible if you don't.
also...save some money to re-buy a lot of the programs you now use, because vista doesn't have any drivers to make them work.
by the way...i'm back to running XP. _________________ rowell gormon

Honestly, I'd stick with XP for as long as you can. It's such a resource hog that even a well-spec'd computer runs slowly with it.
It's kind of the George Bush of PC OS's. Looks good at the start....turns out to not work all that well in practice. Now everybody's remembering how good things used to be with the old OS (or pres). _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

* Agree with the "biggest, fastest, most powerful" part
* I'd replace "you can buy" with "you can afford", only because, duh, it'll last longer that way
* Disagree with the rest of it
First off, 32-bit Vista can't use more than 3.something GB RAM anyway (anything above that is ignored), so loading with as much memory as you can is pointless.
Second, here's what's connected to this computer aside from the usual monitor, kb, mouse:
Focusrite Saffire
Canon scanner
iPhone 3G (woot!)
Logitech QuickCam 9000 Pro
External firewire drive (used for backup only)
Assorted digital / video cameras (usually not connected all the time, though)
Here's what's ALWAYS running on this machine:
Windows Live OneCare
ATI control panel
Logitech QuickCam tray a
Windows Live Messenger
Vista sidebar
FTP server
OneNote
Suitcase
Sync Center (ActiveSync)
Plus I usually have Outlook open, IE is pretty much always open with at least 4 or 5 tabs. iTunes is open a lot lately, too. Photoshop is almost always open if I'm not playing games.
I'll close Outlook so that the little new mail sound doesn't ruin an audition, but Vista never so much as hiccups during recording in Audition 3 on this system. And I don't have any type of special hard drive / RAID array on this machine at home like I do on my DAW at the office.
I don't think there's anything in any version of Vista that will directly affect recording audio to be honest, so if you think Business works for you, you will most likely be fine.
I think the "control media" thing was likely referring to something unrelated to recording audio. _________________ Lou Zucaro

i stand by my experience.
the computer that came with vista wouldn't run anything more than email at the same time...and that was slow.
i got rid of it and installed my xp on an older computer a friend gave me (which did have a better processor and more memory than the one that came with vista). working wonderfully after a year.
a much bigger/better new computer would have let vista work better, but still would not have solved all the problems with suddenly-incompatible older programs with no vista drivers.
if you got it to work for you...more power to you, figuratively and literally. _________________ rowell gormon

did you use any of the tricks mentioned on this board for running XP applications in Vista?
Just curious, as I've found a lot of stuff that was XP worked fine in Vista once you mucked with the drivers.
That said, you shouldn't have to do such things with your OS. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

...this option may have indeed changed since last summer, but at the time of my experience there were no vista drivers for many of my various programs used day-to-day. in some cases, i could buy the newest upgrade (like nero) to get a vista driver. in other cases, my only choice was to discard the program and find something else to buy, since at that time there were no vista-compatible drivers to be had. and there was still the problem of vista needing most of the new computer's resources, which kept other programs from running well, if at all. i gave up after buying two new (and ultimately unnecessary) software packages, and went back to xp on a different machine.
this is what drove a lot of us to be less than enthusiastic about the operating system...completely separate from the usual mac/pc bickering. _________________ rowell gormon

i've got vista as well (home premium)... no problems with memory or anything, and i also usually have 4 or 5 programs open at once, on top of what's loaded in the background when the computer boots up. this machine is nice and fast (2 gigs of ram, 500 gig hard drive)... and it's over a year old already.
my only issue is recording into AA1.5... my levels are a little low. but a click or two of a plug-in takes care of that for me.
as far as drivers... yeah when it first came out there were issues, but none that i couldn't fix right away. and more and more companies are finally putting out vista drivers. regarding the recording levels in AA, they're lower than what i had when i was using XP, because i had to lose my sound card due to driver issues with vista and move to a USB board. (had a lynx one and was sorry to see it go) but as i said, the plug ins take care of that for me now.
as long as it's a new machine, and not an upgrade on an older machine, you should be OK. i think the only real difference with ultimate is data loss protection and backup capability. but if you do that yourself with an external drive you can save yourself $100 and go with home premium. _________________ Jim Feldman

Thanks so much for the input everyone.
My computer is still an older model design, ide VS sata drives etc....I even have an older model processor but the parts I have are new.
I was originally given a corporate copy of XP pro but in order to make everything work I had to borrow a boot disc from someone else if I had to reinstall my OS.
I decided to go totally legit and bought some software off ebay. The mistake I made was trying to save a little money. I bought an OEM disc without a key. "your current corp key will work" they tell me. Being the "allday" that I can sometimes be I bought the software. Of course, I can't make it work any which way.
I then started to look for another copy of XP. Looking at ebay the Vista prices were the same as the XP prices. That's why I was asking about Vista. It seems the best thing for me to do is order up a legit copy of XP.
Thanks again! |

I just had to get a copy of XP from the "bay" for my mother in laws PC.
The oem versions, brand new with key, can be had for around 90 bucks. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.
