The computer that my kids use (Dell Optiplex with Windows XP Pro) seems to have more drek on it than Spy Bot, Ad Aware and the other kleen-up programs can cope with. We have hesitated to reformat the hard drive, which it really seems to need, because their iTunes library would disappear. Or would it? Is the library only resident on the computer, or can it be reinstalled from iTunes? A few years ago we got a little free program from somewhere that would allow it to be reinstalled, but some of the videos didn't make it so they lost some things. Since they paid for all their music and videos themselves, losses are especially painful for them.
Is there a way to make this easy? |

No answers yet? I know so little about this, but my first thought was to back up the library on an external hard drive, or burn CD's/DVD's of the library. How to find the files? Hmm...I just found this article, maybe it will help? Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will chime in soon!

You can burn CDs of your music and then rip them back to MP3. AFAIK, iTunes doesn't allow you to re-download, especially to a different computer. My bro-in-law lost his hard drive a few years ago and subsequently all the music he purchased.

I figured out AFAIK, but DRM is beyond me. |

 DRM is Digital Rights Management (or some prefer Digital Restrictions Management). It's a variation on the ubiquitous "pay to play" theme.. |

DRM is a mechanism that places restrictions and limitations on what you can and cannot do with content you've legally purchased, to keep you from possibly pirating that content.

DRM is why I only use iTunes for songs I can't find anywhere else. Amazon's mp3 downloads are easy to use & come without restriction.

Agreed. Plus you can re-download them if you ever need to, which would alleviate the issue that MCM is running into. They're the same price and have a higher encoding rate, as well.
