VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

Hey group:

I'm honored to have been invited to conduct a workshop on the technology of VO this August at Voice International. I joined the roster last minute after another speaker dropped out and I need to submit my curriculum for the class ASAP. I am having a very hard time focusing down my topics list to fit into an hour and ten minute time slot.
If anyone is attending (or would if could), what areas would you like to learn about and what is most important to you?
Is it acoustics and soundproofing?
Software/hardware choices?
Workflow?

I'd consider the audience and go from there.

Personally, I'd like to chat more about workflow, any of these are good.

Maybe just pre-record a clip and walk some folks through the process, since so many of them are home-based talent.

I would say workflow also. You can cover the other two, but I don't think they'd make for great standalone classes.
Acoustics is interesting, but hard to make a class out of it, as it changes radically for every space a person has.
Software/Hardware is another pretty personal topic that changes with space and voice.

was the person who "dropped out" also slated to speak on the tech of vo? and if so, perhaps you can get some nuggets of info from him/her.

indeed, given the proliferation of home studios, n00bs and wanna-bes, the nuances of recording, editing, sweetening would target that audience. it'd help casting people, too, in a concomitant way, who probably suffer through super-bad audio. ick.

I'd touch a little on on acoustics but break it down into things newbies should know, such as noises people are so used to hearing they are never heard until recorded. That includes computer fans, florescent lights buzzing, street sounds, etc. Then a tad more advanced such as the difference between isolation and acoustic treatment . . . i.e. more foam does not equal isolation. Oh, and egg cartons covering the wall don't work as sound absorbers. Plus, they're a fire hazard.

I totally agree Steve. As an introductory examination of the science and practicality of recording that makes sense. I just didn't think spending a whole class discussing that would be very fun, for students or instructor.

How about hard drives? The ones you use for daily audio work, and what you use for backup....recommendations. Also, should you just replace your hard drives on a somewhat regular basis to avoid problems or just go till they fail?

Also, backup in general....what programs are out there for back up (built-in and purchased), off-site web solutions, etc.

I'll say it now, that's my fear with Voice 2008 - it'll be so catered to those looking to "break in" that the rest of the folks won't get much out of it.

This is inherently my problem with doing a single workshop for an entire 4 day event covering everything that involves the Tech of Voiceover. I don't know who I am addressing; noobs, coming-uppers, veterans? I also decided not to take Q&A since they are going to have a "Tech Terrace" where all manners techy can be discussed with experts all weekend.

On a completely unrelated threadjack style (can you jack your own thread?) note, while at Don's the other day helping him edit a video production I showed him some of the funny Avatars on the forum with his picture in them. He thought it was weird, but was flattered. Who started that trend?

Looking forward to meeting you at Voice 08. I don't know that I signed up for your session though... I honestly don't remember which ones I signed up for. But, I'll make an effort to find you and introduce myself. I'll be there with Randy Thomas and Peter Rofe', helping them out.

That's great, looking forward to meeting you and Randy. I spoke with Randy a few months ago, in fact she was one to plant the seed about my coming to VOICE 2008, along with Bill Ratner. If all goes to plan I will have a booth there, so I am sure you'll see me at some point.
