Here is a quick question. Does it matter what ISDN codec you buy? I hear everyone is using Telos as an industry standard, but is it possible to use another brand and still have the same results? _________________ Does life start at 40? |

in my experience, not really.
early on, there was more chance of incompatibility, but i've had a musicam roadrunner for about 10 years and it can hook up to telos boxes (or newer computer-based audioTX) just fine.
the main reason i went with the musicam is that telos does not sell a mono-only box...hence theirs are all more expensive. _________________ rowell gormon

So the audioTX does a good job as well? I was just looking at the site for them and was getting interested. I dont think there is a way around the high price tag for ISDN but I did run across an ISDN codec for by AdTran for 30 bucks...I think is is 128 kbps and due to the fact that I am not ISDN knowledgable, I dont know if it is something I should buy. _________________ Does life start at 40? |

Kasey,
The Adtran unit you saw is more than likely just an external ISDN modem or NT1 unit. That won't get you what you need and will likely be just a waste of your money.
Yes, AudioTX works, and works very well for many people. For some it's a bit more of a trial getting it hooked up and working than for others. I'm one of the lucky ones. Philip Banks, Wendy Zier, Amy Snively and Donovan Corneetz are all VO-BB members using AudioTX as well. _________________ Be well,

Thanks Bob.
That AdTran unit looked very similar to the units we used when I worked for Metro Networks reporting traffic for different stations, thats why I was interested in it. The units we used, we just dialed up the radio station and we were ready to report with awesome in-studio quality. _________________ Does life start at 40? |

Speakin' of which....
Dave Courvoisier & Frank Frederick are trying very hard to be the next persons on that august list Bob mentioned....but as he also alluded to, there is a bit of a "hassle" curve to get through.
I've now acquired the proper USB Eicon Diva modem, but finding the right drivers has proven to be a challenge. The Dialogic site is not that clear on this, and my XP system can't seem to find the right drivers on install.
Then there's always the question whether Sprint has flipped the right switch in some cobweb-laden room of a nondescript router building somewhere out here.
Frank and I are trying our best to pull each other out of this similar conundrum at the same time. E-mails to AudioTX, calls to Dave Immer at DigiPhone, and support from this place are all in the works, and appreciated.
Rowell, Bob, Donovan....got any suggestions?

i've been at the mercy of dumb luck and one or two tech people at bellsouth who knew what they were looking for and found those elusive "switches in cobweb-laden rooms". bob would probably know more first-hand from the technical side. _________________ rowell gormon

Those Metro AdTran units don't go past G.722 for transmission/reception do they?
I had one of those for a while and it was AOK for broadcast traffic reports, but for commercials and other stuff you need MPEG Layer 2 at least.
Audio TX is a clock-rocker if you have PC.
No Mac biz for them. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I've had my Musicam Prima LT for a number of years now and it's been flawless to date, and they are a few hundred dollars less that Telos, and automatically recognize the format of the sending codec and adjust to that "language" instantly. It's $1,000 to $1,500 more than an Audio TX, but considering that it's an all-in-one machine and the lack of hassles in setting it up, it's been worth it.

I went with the Musicam Road Warrior on the advice of Dave Immer---because it has IP as well as ISDN capability (in case ISDN ever phases out, which doesn't seem imminent, but still possible) and because of it's portability. But I also paid more for those features. I gambled that the extra investment would be worth it. |

Thanks, everyone.... it's safe to say, though, that having expended $1,000+ on the AudiolTX solution...I'm not likely to abandon it YET for something more expensive.
I know it takes a little more hand-holding. I'm not complaining. I've often said these things appeal to my geek side, and I usually learn a lot, and meet a bunch of nice people. That's been the case so far.
When it finally DOES work (and it WILL), it's kinda like hitting yourself in the head repeatedly with a hammer....it feels so good when you stop.

Here's how it worked in May 2002. I walked into Moray Computer services opposite Cluny harbour in Buckie. Handed the shop owner spec's for a PC.
"Build me this"
"Mmmmmmm. Well what you really need is ........."
"Sorry, need to stop you there. Build me THIS, ok?"
"Aye, fine. Be ready Thursday."
The man from BritishTelecom was installing my ISDN lines on Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon I collect PC. Plugged output from mixer into soundcard and took an output from the soundcard for headphones. Checked mic level, recorded test audio. Phone fellow Voice Over, Andy Turvey and asked about a test dial. Typed Andy's number into AudioTX, clicked dial and went into Huttie to talk to Andy down the ISDN line. 10.30am Friday did first ISDN session from new studio in Portgordon.
Nightmare eh?
I know why it worked for me first time. I know nothing and in IT, ignorance is your friend. |
