Melissa,

You mentioned that your computer froze then after a power cycle it stopped responding. So, was this the initial scenario or did the system come back and then froze? If your system was running, then it froze and then after a power cycle it stopped responding, it is a good possibility it is the power supply as has been mentioned.

One thing I would do is open your computer and see if there is a bunch of dust in and around the CPU, Memory, Fan and so on. If there is, then use a can of air to blow it out. Too much dust in a computer can cause it to thermal (heat uHobo Happy and eventually turn off. If this is not the case, try to disconnect the Hard Disk and see if the system will boot without it being plugged in. I've had bad a HD that prevented a system from booting in the past. Also, if you can at least get to the BIOS menu, see if there are any diagnostic options there that may help locate the issue. And, if you have it, try to boot from a recovery CD and see if it has any diagnostic test that you can run.
If all else fails, replace the Power Supply.

One thing to note, powering on a computer is one of the most stressful things you can do to it which is why I try to keep my systems in Stand-By/Sleep when they are not in use. I seem to have pretty good luck with this strategy.

Good luck.

Turned on the (usually) reliable laptop just before Christmas and got a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner. Long story short: Hard drive went bye-bye and had to pay to retrieve data and slap in a new drive, which took the Neanderthals at a nearby computer repair shop nearly a month and good chunk of cash (not to mention some lost gigs).

Moral: If you have a computer it WILL fail.

Chapter Two:

Great suggestions all. Here's the funny thing. I swapped out monitors - still nothing. Everything was spinning up. I could shut it down using CTRL ALT DEL. And then I figure there was nothing else I could do til today. So I shut it down. Then the storm we were expecting came through. And now we have no power til Friday..

Think something's telling me it's time to get that laptop I've been meaning to get?

PS: Discovered a friend actually fixes computers. YAY!
