I'm a TV audio supervisor and do free-lance audio work for sports broadcast trucks. If, as an Audio 1 (A-1) or A-2 (assist) you're not totin' Sony MDR-7506s, you're not properly dressed and you don't get into the dance. But I've been around long enough that there were plenty of Koss cans in my past.

Hart,
Awesome rack cover. In my old radio studios we could control our mic's DBX unit and that was it. I do love lights. At night before bed when I shut everything down in the studio the LED's still burning look like a small city. <g>
Eric,
By Georgia law you already are 17 if you're that close. And, if you're worried about nepotism laws (what a silly thing) just say,"Look, I didn't ask to be born into this family and shouldn't be held libel for something I can't control. Either let me work here or I'll get dad to run for governor and you'll all be fired." As you're leaving be mumbling something like "Now, where did I put Michael Moore's phone number?" |

I'm glad this discussion was here. Made the trip today and upgraded headphones to the Sony MDR 7506. What a difference! I'm hearing stuff I didn't hear before (and that has its good and bad).
I loves me the VO-BB. _________________ We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

I'll throw another vote in for the SONY MDR-7506. Like Scott, I didn't know what I was missing, or rather not hearing, in my recording until I purchased a pair of these. I figured, if they are good enough for Rodney Saulsberry, they certainly are good enough for me.

I just picked up the AKG K240 Studio headphones from Sweetwater. Those are what I use at work in our audio booths, and I love the sound. I had purchased some Sennheiser 280 Pro cans at first, but they squeeze the dickens out of me head, and are too closed for my liking, so they'll be up on eBay soon unless someone here wants to take them. The AKG 'phones are semi-open and don't squeeze nearly as much. _________________ Justin S. Barrett

One more vote for the DT770's, had them for 10 years now and they look like hell and smell worse, but that's because of all the cans I own (240's, 7506's, Koss), they are the ones I return to again and again. Are they the most accurate, no, I'd say the 240's are. But they can be worn for hours on end and are bomb proof. Step on 7506's and you'll break 'em. Step on the DT770's and you'll break you. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I always use 7506s when I wear my audio engineering hat, but I think they're really shrill, hyped, and unnatural but great for picking up problems in the high and low end. The real world doesn't sound like it does in a 7506. I think they're a wonderful tool all the same and I understand why they're deservedly an audio standard: everybody can work well with them.
At home, I like Audio Technica ATH headphones. Comfortable hard-eggshell isolation and really flat old-school sound. Once you get used to them you can pick up almost anything you normally would on a 7506, and they're richer in the mids (good for VO, imo). Most importantly, they're not fatiguing on the ears. I can't stand listening to a 7506 at moderate levels for more than an hour. I could listen to the ATHs all day. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Yeah, Lance. Which ones.
The ATH Series is supposed to be AT's Studio monitoring and mixing headphones. The new ATH M50's are getting rave reviews. Anybody using them? _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

Nowadays on ISDN sessions/phone patch.....I just use a pair of small Sony earbud headphones in the booth so I can hear the client. I just put one of the buds in my ear and tuck the other in my shirt pocket or whatever. Since I do not use headphones when recording, this works out extremely well for me. I do not have myself in the headphone mix...just the client. I rely on the VO "force" aka mic technique etc to ensure a masterful recording.
I have the Sennheiser HD280's....very nice....they can be tight on the head compared to others but the isolation and the "mix-ability" of these phones are great. _________________ Ben

I'm a fan of the Sennheiser HD280 Pros too... no cans while voicing, but when checking a mix their sound is very true and the noise isolation is by far the best I've experienced. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

The M50's are excellent, but I usually wear the plain old ATH-M40fs.
One thing about the AT's...my ATH's still look like they're a month old even though I've had them for a few years. The Sonys break down really easily cosmetically and physically: I've had two break from very light use. Again, they're all hype: AT, Sennheiser, and Beyerdynamic all make better headphones. I only own Sonys because of the justifiable herd mentality behind them: they're good, you can buy them anywhere and everyone knows what they sound like. Kinda like the...oh, I won't say it. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Lance, that's what I have.
I've had mine for 7 or 8 or....years and love 'em.
I can't say they look like new, but they are as comfortable as the first day I got 'em and the sound is great....I have also dropped them more times than I care to admit, and they've survived!

Ya know, I got a pair of Sony MDR V600s a while back, and that seems to be when all my soundproofing troubles began.
