Hi Folks, I'm new to the VO-BB and this is my first posting so I thought I'd start by saying hello to everyone.
Just wondered if any of the male voices herein have had any experience working with any of the "modern retro" tube mics and what your results have been. |

I'm not trying to sound rude, but the search function might make it easier for you.
BTW: what do you mean by "modern retro"? Like Peluso or Telefunken? Or do you mean actual vintage mics from RCA, Neumann, AKG? Or are we talking true remakes, like Wunder and the guys at micshop.com?
We've got a few Peluso users here, along with a few Telefunken lovers. More than a few love their Lawsons, and those that have them swear by their RCA ribbons. A few of us have vintage and boutique mics, and we enjoy those as well.
As for how I feel about the modern tube mics. Depends on the mic and the voice. Some stuff I love, some I hate. Just like LDCs, you've got to try them to see what fits your best (though the Teles, most of the MGs, most of the Neumanns, some of the Soundeluxes, Wunders, Manleys, and Horches all get a thumbs up from me; I wouldn't consider Lawson to be a retro since he took step in a different direction, but they're all great mics as well).

Hey welcome to the throat board!
Tried a Blue Cactus retro tube once, but found it was not very suitable for my voice. It looks awesome by the way! When I then tried the (condenser) Kiwi I was sold immediately. |

| Thanks for all the input. I tried the search mechanism first with various entries and came up short of any information that was relevant...so I thought I'd throw it out to the forum group...am not intereseted in a vintage mic but, instead, am looking for feedback on any of the newer repro's that are on the market, as experienced by male voices. So let's see if I can narrow that down some: My focus is in the "47" family of tube mics. I've voiced several spots on the Lawson but it didn't make the short list for me due to lack of lower mid mojo. I really dig the vintage C12 sound too but am not willing to lay out the huge bucks to acquire the real deal. I also love the sound of a first gen 87 and am considering an innertube mod for my ai, Since my VO biz is fairly high end stuff I'm just looking to put some punch into the tracks from the home studio. |

You may be looking for something that "just ain't there!"
There's a big difference in the response of the C12 type "repros" and the 47 type.
Can you give us a sample of your voice?

Really? The Lawson didn't have a midrange that you liked?
That's a first for me.
Willie's right that the C12 and U47 are two totally different sounding mics.
If you want to add some punch, why not use an 1176?
Seems to be the rage with the local imaging guys out here.

I've heard really good things about Brauner mics. I haven't tried one personally though.

I tried a couple of Brauner microphones, they are way up there with the absolute best. Hence they don't come cheap, they are amongst the most expensive in the industry. I did a voice job the other day at a studio where they use both the tube Valvet as the tube VM-1. The latter was said to have cost around thirteen grand (yes, you're reading it right!) ... W-O-W! As far as I know the AE-N isn't a tube though, but a FET Cardioid mic. It's the anniversary edition of the Phantom Classic Condenser. |

I'd first move this to the critique section...
The way to post a file is to upload it to a place on your website or anywhere else, and then link it. Like so:
NAME OF FILE
In code (delete all underscores!) replace the generic names for your file's location and filename.
