Finally got some voice on to get a room check. This is the MCA SP1 into the Mic Mate. There is no processing or noise removal. How does the room sound? Any electrical or room noise? Ignore the birds, they have received the eviction notice.

Thanks, folks. This is one great place!

Heard no nastiness but the room is too live.

Really? I didn't think it sounded too live, at least not listening through speakers...thought it sounded nice. Didn't try it through cans, though.

Rob,
You let me know when you get paid for a spot on that new system and you will receive an award certificate from VO Mic Test.

I am not kidding. You exemplify what it can be all about.

Hey thanks, Willie! I appreciate that a whole lot. But it does bring up a bothersome aspect to entering this or any other business.

You know, I've not tried to get into this without paying the dues in whatever form, be it quality equipment, practice or training. But I didn't want to invest a ton of money and then find out that I wasn't up to the work.

I've been in other businesses and seen what the guy who comes in quick and dirty and undercuts the market price does to everything from local businesses to whole industries and professions. We all see it everyday in everything from the WalMart phenom to the guys that will do a produced spot for $30. Call it free enterprise or free trade, there is a one for all and all for one aspect of living in this world that matters. I'd rather walk away from something than have a hand in messing it up for others.

Soapboxes for everyone!

The room is too live in a tubby boxy way that is muddying up the midrange quite a bit. The noisefloor is good at -64dBFS, but it's a slightly hissy noisefloor, which could be a MicMate issue perhaps. Also, since you're peaking at -20dBFS, that -64dBFS is going to go up a lot with processing to get to broadcast.

The mic itself is good and works well for your voice. I just got an MXL v67g and really like it: I did some loud signing on it this afternoon and it never got strident like more expensive mics sometimes can (for example). MXL makes several other decent mics that work well for vo: v63m, 2003, and especially the v69me, M3 and V6 (the last two are US-made). The 990 is also a good cheap vo mic and it's practically the same as the MCA SP1.

You definitely have a good foundation upon which you can work. Good luck!
