Hope this is correct forum.

I am considering using 1and1.com to host my website. They do not offer sound file support, but said I can embed those files.

How is this done, and how do you select the way the file is displayed on the site?

Thanks, folks!

Rob,

I'm no website guru (Paging LOU, Paging Mr. Lou Zoucaro!!!!!!)

But you may want to check this thread:
http://www.vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3249

Talking about this little flash player many of us now use (Thanks Kafer!):

with more techie info here:

Not sure if that's what you mean by "embed" but thought I'd throw it out there!

Liz

There's really no way to NOT offer sound file support.

A web server is just a computer that's been specially configured to store the files that make up websites, and allow people on the internet to have access to those files.

Putting a sound file in a website is no different than putting a sound file on your computer.

While it's true that the web server software needs to know what a sound file is so that it "serves" the file correctly, I don't think I've heard of a webserver that isn't pre-configured to serve audio files.

Unless 1and1.com turned off access to various media files, if you put the files in your website directory on their server, they should play fine.

Getting the files into your website directory can be done via FTP (built into Windows, or you can find any number of FTP programs out there) or through a Content Management System if your website includes one.

The easiest way to let people have access to your audio files is simply to put a link to them. Or you can use a Flash player as Liz suggested. There are any number of ways to handle it.

If you are building your site yourself, just do some quick Google searches and you should find much more info on how to do any of these things than you'll know what to do with.

Or if you post specific info about your host (UNIX? Windows?) and how you're creating your website, I or others here can probably offer some more specific info.

Good luck and have fun!

My site is on 1 and 1 and what Lou tells you is absolutely spot on. Not only do I offer my demos as mp3 files either to play or to download, but I use the javascript player that Jeff Kafer suggested some months ago on my front page strictly for my core demos. (Um, Dave... does that require an apostrophe-hehehe).
