It's compressed fiberglass for sound-proofing.
http://www.owenscorning.com/comminsul/products.asp?product=1
I apparently can't get it. Owens Corning won't sell to an end-user and Home Depot can't order less than a zillion square feet.
This is the stuff some of my favorite recording studios use. Is there anything you know of that is darned close in composition/ sound attenuation value?
I'd really rather not pay for shipping bundles of 2' x 4' sheets of the stuff. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

If you have a favorite HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) buddy, give them a call. You may have to make a reasonable offer since they do order large quantities and won't know what to charge you.
I was worried about the shipping thing too, but it has been no problem for me. It usually comes in packs of six.
Acoustimac is my source. There are others _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

Yeah, I saw Acoustimac, but I can't find shipping info without "registering". _________________ DBCooperVO.com

D.
I recall it was less than $30 ($26.xx) to get it to me, and I am half way to you.
Factor that in if you find your local Heating & Air folks have it.

Let correct that shipping amount. I just looked at my last bill and the total for a six pack of 2"X2'X4' was $97.75 including shipping. So the shipping is way less than $30.. more like $16 - $20.
(Now you see why my wife keeps the books.) _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

Do a Google Search for "Owens Corning 703"
This will take you to a list that includes places to buy by the piece. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Geardre,
The US is roughly the ONLY place where they sell/carry the OC 703/705 stuff. I've been trying to get some bags of the stuff shipped to Curaçao and they'll only do that when I order half a sea container's worth.
My other favorite forum deals with that stuff all the time and there's hardly any insulation product that has the density of the rigid fiberglass. There's one actually, but they don't carry it everywhere. It's called Rockwool or Roxul, and is also very effective.
And you might want top check out THIS COMPANY for they carry both plus a load of other soundproofing stuff and it can be ordered online...
If you have any questions about room acoustics, I can probably be of help. I've been around in this business and have built or helped to build quite a few recording studio's and voice-booths from scratch. |

I can very easily get 2" rigid compressed fiberglass, it's just not Owens Corning 703.
Is there a noticable difference? _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Deardre,
Try and find out what theirs specs are, I have a comparison list of most brands of insulation somewhere, so I'd probably be able to check whether they match or are anywhere near the figures that OC has. The key factor is the figure for NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) that states the theoretical amount of sound absorption. It is a summing of all factors at the different spot frequencies.
I can't make it look right in columns (wouldn't know how to) but such figures should look something like this:
Product thickness mounting density 125hz 250hz 0.5khz 1khz 2khz 4khz NRC
703, plain 2" (51mm) on wall 3.0 pcf (48 kg/m3) 0.17 0.86 1.14 1.07 1.02 0.98 1.00
703, plain 2" (51mm) 16" air 3.0 pcf (48 kg/m3) 0.66 0.95 1.06 1.11 1.09 1.18 1.05
Notice the difference in values between using the 703 fixed to a wall or with a 16"gap in between the insulation and the wall? Please also bear in mind that differences in NRC of less than 0.15 are not significant.
Find the specs on that available rigid fiberglass for me, and I'll be happy to compare it with other stuff for you. Also if you can find the mineral wool stuff (mostly greenish or grey coloured) that can be very useful too.
The thing is, if you need to absorb sound (better yet, sound REFLECTIONS) you need one thing... mass. The density of the stuff is the key factor. If 2" isn't sufficient, add another 2" layer or just use the 4", 6" or even 8" varieties. Also define whether it will be used for fighting reflections or for bass trapping. When the latter is the case, make sure they have an OPEN structure on the back and at least some inches of air behind them.
I can provide some images of how it's done if needed. |

I have heard about leaving airspace behind the panels. I need to be careful, though— my room is only 7' by 9.5'!
I'll see if I can find the acoustic specs are, or at least what specific brand/type of insulation I have at my fingertips. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

If you can find a brandname or type remark like (for instance) "R-11" I can probably make a good comparison. If those specifics can't be found, you 'd better not touch it. Claims can only be claims when accurate measurements have been made according to the appropriate standards.
Furthermore, you needn't be concerned about losing space when using airgaps behind your panels. The most common problems in a room is the low-end/bass buildup in the corners (all corners!!) anyway. Since sound is a threedimensional thing, that means treating as many corners as possible. And by that I also mean the wall-to-ceiling and the wall-to-floor 'corners'. How high is your room Deebs? Also an important factor... and uhm... could you post me another picture of your room from let's say 2 different angles? Just to have an idea as to what can be done there with the least amount of work |

Ceiling (tin ceiling!) is 7 feet high.
