So, I buy a brand spankin' new computer to dedicate exclusively to vo. Dual core Intel E8400 and 2 gigs of Ram, so I think it should be adequate to run Adobe Audition 1.5
I looked forward to being able to bus power my Presonus Inspire with 6 pin cable vs the old 4 pin + wall wort I had to use with the old computer.
Now, with the new setup, I'm getting noise. It sounds like static. It is random. It sometimes occurs during recording, sometimes just in playback. I can't trace it to any particular cause. Shut off internet, shut off Skype, shut off anti-virus, disables internal sound card and I still get it.
If I switch back to the old system, the old computer, (6 to 4 pin) no noise.
I wish the new 'puter had a 4 pin connection to try, but no luck.
No noise using the only USB interface I have, micportpro.
So, I think I've narrowed it down to a problem with either the cable or the bus power. Time to eliminate the cable.
Question is, before I go buy a new fw cable, what should I buy? Length, brand etc? I would like to buy a longer cable, but is that counterproductive? Current one is about 5' although Presonus says it is 6'.
Is there a way to test the old cable?
Thanks,

You sure it's not a sampling frequency or buffer size issue on the new machine? _________________ Lou Zucaro

Lou,
I've got both set at 16 bit 44.1 khz.
Latency is set at 10.0 ms on the inspire.
When I go into settings on AA, the only difference in all the settings is the reserve capacity under the temp folder on the new machine. It's set at 956 mb on the new one, and 1525 on the old machine. Reserve on both secondary temp files is 200mb. Could that be it?
There is 93 gigs of space on the E partition so can I just change that to 1525 by typing it in, or does it require something more than that?
edit...I went ahead and typed it in and changed the temp capacity. Still get the occasional crackles.

Increase your "buffer size" (should be in Adobe Audition's "preferences" -- in Logic it's in the "Audio" section under preferences) all will go away like magic. _________________ The Blog:

Under options-settings, I find edit view play/record buffer set at 1, using 10 buffers and EV preview buffer minimum size 250 ms.
What do you suggest I change it to?

When I switched from a USB(Mackie Spike) to a Firewire(Motu Ultralite), I got popping and crackling, etc. and sputtering in and out from the Ultralite-----in short, a clearly unacceptable audio signal.
Found out it was because my Firewire card was incompatible. Installed a new Firewire card and it has performed flawlessly since then. |

You'll have to play with it, not sure how yours is calibrated, but just start increasing the size until it all goes away. _________________ The Blog:

I found some suggested settings from Adobe's site.
I increased them, but still have the problem.
Did I mention I'm getting it even outside of Audition?
For example, I'm listening to a cd via windows media player and am still getting a occasional sizzle and crackle.
Rob, what kind of card did you go to?

if it's independent of the application, then it's either the cable, or the card.
if the chipset for your FW is SiS, then it's probably the card (lost count of the number of issues cords with those chips have had). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

The Fw in on the mb, not an outboard card.
The mb is an Asus P5k...
Sheesh, I'm hoping a new cable will fix this.
If not, do you think an outboard fw card would do the trick and if so, what's a good one?

The Firewire card that I got is ADS Technologies 3-Port Firewire PCI card. It has a Texas Instruments chip in it, which is the key for compatability with some MOTU interfaces. Available from Sweetwater.
I tried to find it in their online catalog but couldn't for some reason. But I just got it a week ago.... I think they may have had to special order it.
If interested, contact Ryan Sloan, he's my rep there, and very helpful. |

Thanks all for your suggestions and help.
With the exception of a shower and a ten minute or so nap, I'm going on 13 hours dealing with this mess. So, I better go be nice to the family and pick up on it tomorrow.
Any and all suggestions still welcome!
Thanks,

I'd swap the cable anyway... Presonus usually give you junk cables.
That said, if you're using the one of the 775 based Ausus MBs, then you're using the Agere L-FW3227 chipset.
Try checking for an updated BIOS, as these have had some issues in the past. Otherwise, a new FW card is in your future. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I had FW noise issues also pops/clicks/etc. and a new FW card (SIIG 1394 3-port PCI i/e) solved the problem. |
