Can someone give me the difference between PCM and ADPCM when saving wave files? Audition warns me that ADPCM is a lossy compression, but I get no such warning when using PCM.

Frank?

Jeff,

I'm not Frank, but I do know that ADPCM is a lossy compression scheme. PCM just means pulse code modulation. WAV and AIFF are two popular PCM formats.

So then it would be fair to say that not ALL .wav files are uncompressed?

Jeffrey,

Correct, though you find very few that use the ADPCM compression scheme, relatively speaking.

I'll just stick with PCM. Thanks, Bob.

Well, let me be Frank with you... what Bob said in both cases is correct.

ADPCM is often used in telephone systems due to the compressed format.
