I just got my Costco deals for May 15 - June 21 and there is an external 500GB for $159 with the coupon. Not a bad deal if you need some storage.

That's a sweet deal.

But I've been eyein' the La Cie Terabit Firewire 800, a friend of mine picked one up about 6 months ago for a $150.00 I think he got it off Craigslist.

Who would have thought we would ever need a terabit hard drive?

Just a quick cautionary note gents...

While size is important (I promise this isn't going anywhere untoward Deebs!), another very important consideration is the actual spin rate... I would not recomend using anything less than a 7200 rpm drive if you plan to use it for real-time transport. However, IF you're only planning to use it as a passive back-up device... ignore me!

I pose a challenge to you on your next trip to Costco... try to leave that darn store with a bill of less than $200 (not counting your new hard drive!)... there's something about that store that makes me dump all sorts of stuff in quantities that are grossly obcene, into my buggy. Ahhh, the joys of North American overindulgence. GUILTY Embarrassed

If that drive is a 500GB Western Digital My Book Home edition, I would avoid it. I've seen several go bad. The MyBook Pro is pretty good, however.

I would NEVER recommend using an external drive for production. Back up only. As inexpensive actual hard drives are, you are much better off financially and technically going the internal route.

For back ups though, these external drives are great. It allows you to have your files in a different location and back up multiple systems on one device.

My Book Pro is a good device. Allows several types of interface, USB, Firewire, etc... I have one myself.

And for what it's worth (assuming you have an Office Depot nearby), here's a 500GB external for $100. And Walmart has a Maxtor 500GB for $100 as well.

My Maxtor went south in less than a year, and couldn't be repaired. My back-up is now a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB- so far so good! I got it at Circuit City for $139 on sale Smile

I've had too many Maxtor drives go south on me. Don't use them any more.

I went to a SAN-based solution, but my home network is dedicated to much more than VO.

/keeping a malware zoo is really space consuming.
//yes, it's physically separated from the rest of the network.

Color me LaCie.
I record onto an outboard FW drive named Gigantor.

I had been using a partition of my internal drive, but kinda thought the stress of reading and writing might be wearing out my drives too quickly.
So, the speedy LaCie.

$100 ! That's always a deal. Ya can't beat craigslist sometimes. I love that site. Sold and bought a lot of stuff there.

The drive is an Iomega Screenplay at Costco.
