Can we get a "gift of gab" decoder on this?

Ok everyone here's my little sound bite....I should tell you that it has been a long struggle to get this sound. I had no presence or any richness to my voice..I replaced nearly every piece of equipment in my chain trying to get some decent sound. Then after replacing the motherboard...things changed.
GpClick
Here is my signal chain I am using an E-MU 0404 sound card, Summit Audio 2BA-221 pre amp, mackie 1402 vlz3, and a CM-67SE microphone. (it's a custom made mic) Any other settings or equipment mentioned or not are proprietary and confidential...I did really use any though...that is pretty much raw except for a litte eq on my sound card.
Also I have just completed a new demo. It is on my site www.itsthatvoice.com Feel free to take a listen. I welcome your comments.
PS the only one up right now is the commercials demo.

Pissing and Rick Roll posts .....yeah, that is what I really hoped this thread would turn into.

I wasn't at all intending this to be a helpful and informative post for those looking for equipment upgrades...be it a mic or pre-amp.....or the newest and latest set of Apogee couch cushions around their head as they record.

Carry on.

i love this thread, jacks and all. allen--the west wing president it is.

i oughta mash up my whole thang, really, just to try it out. mine's nothing but mic/mixer/sc with the pre removed a year ago.

deebs, i've got lots of the same junk that you do so i might test the settings you posted here.

meantime, i gave it a whirl here viking style

If it's any comfort, I believe Stock, Aitken, and Waterman with engineer Phil Harding made sure Mr. Astley sang through Neumann microphones and Focusrite preamps.

Ben, I love the sound 416 into the Red 8 (I've always coveted a Red 7) It sound like a totally different mic - it has all the good aspects of a 416, but sweeter.

Of course your voice helps things along too.

That is funny! Now if we can just get the settings in case someone wants the Rick Astley sound...LOL.

Thanks for the kind words Lance. I appreciate it.

Most definitely.

Its the bestist for you. The U87 really captures your low resonance in an amazing way, whereas Ben's chain harvests his high mids perfectly. If you both were forced to swap your kit out I don't think either of you would be as happy with what you have.

I used to have the NT1A, but I sounded like even more of a dork on it...however, Bobbin and many other talents sound great on it.

It's interesting to hear what people use, and how they mix and match their gear. U87s and 416s may be standards...but I've heard them ending up very differently from different places (there's those things called mic placement, room acoustics, and preamps...)

Here's mine for what it's worth. The loved/hated Senn 416 into a John Hardy M1 pre into a Presonus Firebox using Gotham cables. Here are three of my typical reads with no compression or EQ.

Hart's Sample

Something has changed since I moved from NC and I'm not happy about it. I'm assuming at the moment it's the closet I record in as it's very inferior to the booth I had. So I find myself using more compression and EQ in an attempt to make up for it.

Next items on my list? First a house if our old one will ever sell (on the market 157 days and counting), then a new booth for the house. And I would like to add a compressor back in the chain as my next gear purchase.

Anyway, feel free to critique it for what it's worth. Sometimes I'll use an RE20 on softer reads to get a bit muddier and less sibilant sound.
