I'm trying to complete my Source-Connect certification, and it's just getting to be a hassle, honestly.....
The Source Elements tech guy is just as nice as can be...and patient... but I just can't seem to meet their quality criteria for feeding sound files. My live voice stuff is fine, he says.
Anyway... he wants me to change my Hardware Buffer size...
From the Pro-Tools menu bar... it goes like this:
Settings ----> Playback Engine ----> H/W Buffer size
My ONLY option in the dialog box is 256 samples. There should be 512 and 1024 also. The Source-Connect guy wants me to change is to either of those last two settings to improve my playback quality, but my only option from the drop-down box is 256.
Source-Connect encouraged me to contact Digidesign help.... I've e-mailed and posted on the DUC...but you know how slow THAT can go... and the best-possible repository of online help is right here on the VO-BB....correct?
I'm using M-Powered Pro-Tools 7.4cs2 on my Win XP Pro SP2 system with a 2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 Gigs of Ram
PT experts? Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave,
I wish I could be of some help. On my Pro Tools M-Powered (7.3) I do have all 3 of those options. _________________ Be well,

Dave maybe a longshot here... but the ONLY reason I can think of that would cause hardware buffer to not allow you to change anything is (better yet) must be OS-related. I've seen this happening on a Mac platform where they also run Logic Audio on the same machine they installed Pro Tools on. Only this was a matter of "Core Audio" being able to serve one application (using that Core Audio) at the same time...
And since you're already on XP WITH SP2 I can't see why things wouldn't work... unless it has to do with the previous problem you posted a while back dealing with the suspect user profile. Will post this question to a friend of mine (PT mega-power user... on Mac that is...) . Who knows what he'll come up with. I do know that the current SP3 doesn't do anything to improve performance, so don't go that route, whatever you do!
Good luck "Mr. Logo-of-a-lifetime"! |

Check under "Setup > Playback Engine" there is a box there that if checked, will always make PT default to its lower settings... uncheck that.
This might be OT, but here's an interesting article on Pro Tools LE and latency.

Thanks, folks...
Ed...I've got the Source-Elements Desktop... the Source-Elements tech guy said the signal came through clearer on Pro-Tools...but I agree...it's a simple, clean, and workable interface.
The answer might be in settings on the software that comes with the M-audio unit. I'll let you know.

then only uninstall PT , then set the buffer to what you want on the M-Audio control panel/software, and finally reinstall PT - that should work.

Get a LynxTWO card and chuck SlowTools as far as the eye can see. "Oh, did I say that?" _________________ Genus |

Seconded. I much prefer using my Lynx over PT interface.
I went with an AES16 card, but there's not a bad one in the lot. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

'Getting closer and closer to chucking PT...
YES! The M-Audio Mobile Tube Pre USB software interface controls the sample rate for H/W buffer playback engine.... so that's solved.
In the meantime, my M-Audio PT 7.4cs2 has decided to freeze everytime I launch. I'm in the process of uninstalling, re-installing, then re-installing that M-audio software, 'cause it hangs on the playback engine portion of start-up.
You know.... that wastebasket is just looking better and better.... I can't rule out operator error, but I'm no rookie with PC's and software, and I know a problem a when I see one.
I have no idea what a LynxTWO card is....

I've always enjoyed using their stuff and they're fanatical regarding quality control (take after my own heart ). Recently I added some major Lynx gear to my own studio and I've been throughly pleased with the results.
Cool thing is that with some of their stuff, I can swap back and forth between PT and whatever other DAW application I want to use (expect to invest in more than a card to do that through an interface though). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Dave!
I've been gone for a bit but I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with another tech issue here...I blame the aliens. And you should too.
I'm just saying.
