Interesting, but not surprising. Definitely applies to most societies.
The follow-up question is: owning what goods and services make one a member of which class?
Obviously, if you don't have a U87 you're a rank pleb. If you have a U87ai, you're upper middle class, and there's a 35% chance that you vote Lib Dem.
If you like dynamic mics like I do, you're naff, and possibly skivey. Numbers bear out the fact that those of us in this happy throng eat Heinz baked beans at least nine times a fortnight. Or is that fartnight? _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

This is class -
My friend Alex and his then fiance(now wife) Gale are visiting one of the old stately homes of England. Seeing an old portrait of an Admiral, Gale comments to Alex.
"You're Mum has a smaller version of that picture on the mantlepiece in her sitting room". At this point one of the elderly ladies who stalk the corridors of such homes snapping at visitors "Don't touch that it's from Ceylon and very valuable!" stepped out of the shadows.
"That's a portrait of First Sea Lord Admiral ....."
"Yes, I know" smiled Alex "my great-great grandfather"
"Oh I'm most terribly sorry" said the elderly custodian "I didn't realise you were one of the family!" |

What typical UK tabloid b*llocks, trying stir up stupid resentment and divisions. I cannot abide then.
Its who you are, not what baubles you have or how much you earn. I have known multi-millionaires whom I would have described as working-class and elderly couples as poor as church mice who were certainly upper class. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

Ha. They are so far behind. Don't they know that the Working Class is the NEW Middle Class? _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Well said, David. My initial post was in part poking fun at The Sun's subtext that class is determined by possessions.
Sorry about the atrocious pun. I couldn't pass that one up. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Honest people try to tear down barriers and then newspapers do their best to build new ones.
I'm a firm believer in finding the person behind the froth and as a result of that would like to see a new social class - Parasite. I wonder how many, having read a survey, would choose it?
A friend visited my mother a few years ago. He runs a large IT company.
"I've just bought myself a new car" he announced "come and see". Parked outside the house was a Ferrari of some sort.
"Lovely, dear one" said my mother "would you give me a lift to Kingston, I can cycle back if there's room for my bike?"
"Sorry, no where to put your bike"
"Not very practical dear one, is it?" |
