Todd, how are things?
We had tremor reports from Eastern KY.
Strong earthquake rocks Midwest
WEST SALEM, Ill. (A - A strong, 5.4-magnitude earthquake has
rattled wide parts of the Midwest.
It was centered in southern Illinois near the town of West
Salem, but was felt as far away as Milwaukee, 350 miles to the
north. Skyscrapers shook in Chicago's Loop, 240 miles north of the
epicenter, and in Indianapolis, 160 miles to the northeast. People
in Cincinnati and St. Louis also felt the earth shake.
A resident of Philo, Illinois, south of Champaign, says the
house was shaking and the windows were rattling. And he says for
central Illinois, it was "a big deal."
There are no reports of any injuries or significant damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey says this morning's quake happened in
a region known as the Illinois basin-Ozark dome, which does not
usually get quakes. The biggest on record, also a 5.4, happened in
1968. |

i'm about 60 miles from the epicenter. i don't THINK there is any damage to the homestead, but it woke me up - house was rumbling pretty good. my thought wasn't earthquake, though, it was tornado. i got up to look around and saw clear skies and figured it was the wind.

My aunt in Bellefontaine Ohio felt the quake as well... and that is ways away from the epicenter. Kinda makes you respect mother nature's temper |

Todd,
I hope everything is OK, once you have a chance to check. Meanwhile, I'm glad to know you're doing well, being so close to the epicenter. _________________ Be well,

Glad you're okay, Todd.
It woke us up in St Louis, thinking the bed was possessed. Actually, we didn't get much sleep last night because the menagerie (two dogs and Mama Cat with 3 babies, plus a nearly invisible boy cat) bothered us for several hours before the actual shaking started. I guess they really do sense these things. Better go check on the horse.
Oh, and the house foundation as well, I guess. We're in a 110 year old farmhouse with a rubble stone foundation. Gulp. |

they're now saying it was a 5.2 - not a 5.4 - not that that means anything to me.
no damage or injuries reported around here. the dogs went crazy, though.
it's funny the perspective, though. when i heard windows rattling & felt the rumble i immediately thought "tornado". i've been in a few tornadoes - never an earthquake ... very similar feeling at 4 in the morning. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Were the tremors really felt all the way from Salem, IL to Eastern KY? That's a heck of a long way!
We still have a house in little old Gilbertsville (Marshall County) on KY Lake about 20 miles east of Paducah. Haven't heard anything from the neighbors yet.

Supposedly the quake was felt as far north as Elgin, IL, which is a far NW 'burb of Chicago.
Some of the phone calls to local TV stations this morning were pretty hilarious. Like the woman who described how she was sitting on the toilet and it started to shake and it scared her because she thought there was a creature in it. _________________ Lou Zucaro

I lived in Elgin for 4 years. They do have creatures in the toilets there. _________________ Be well,

on a quick jaunt to the gas station this morning i talked to a trucker who was in olney, il at the time and watched from the parking lot as his truck did the "wave" in front of him. not shaking - but rolling up & down from front to back. he said it was very cool, and very scary. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis
