Just to give this thread a bump, I just installed Ubuntu 7.1.0 Gutsy on an extra 80gb drive I had and wasn't using. I am continually amazed at the progress the developers make on each release. The last version of Ubuntu I tried was 5 (hoary) and it was okay. This one is just fantastic. It installed in about 20 minutes and everything "just works". I'm listening to XMMS (a winamp clone) with a smooth jazz shoutcast station playing and surfing the VO-BB on Firefox. Just lovely!

I think I'll take my desktop at the radio station and covert it to Ubuntu. All I use it for is writing copy and other word processing tasks, web surfing and email.

A, I totally agree. I have Ubuntu on a second computer and now install it over Windows for friends and family that just want a good, well running basic computer. However, I do have an HP scanner it doesn't recognize. "Wine" will also let me use some old faithful Windows programs. Good stuff.

I've also noticed that there isn't a lot of software that offers multiple tracks. There was a very "Pro Tool-ish" program on Ubuntu Studio.

You mean "Ardour"? I've not tried that one. I've thought about it....but never have. I've not used any distro of Linux to record with. I first learned of and played wth Audacity on Fedora Core 3. My Echo Mia card IS supported...with the right Alsa package. This Ubuntu intall sees it, but I have not gotten to spend any time to try and get it working. The newsgroups and forums are loaded with stuff on the Mia and other types of cards that other people have gotten to work. This particular machine has the Echo Mia AND a plain ol' Soundblaster card in it. They both exist peacefully and I can use either one I want. According to one forum, the Mia should work right away with Ubuntu Studio. Anyway, that's something for another time.

What I would like to do is build a new computer for the studio and keep this one for Linux. Maybe later on I'll be able to do that.

Like I mentioned in my previous post, the work computer is nothing more than a glorified typewriter with email and web. I don't use it for editing or anything like that. Ubuntu would be a good one to try on it using the Live CD to make sure everything is supported and being that it's an older machine, that should not be a problem.
