Definitely makes sense that the static-sensitive bit on the case could have contributed to all of this.

Hopefully that's the end of your motherboard troubles!

Oh boy!

It's been nearly 2 decades since I had a problem with a static discharge issue on a computer, but yeah... that'll do it.
