Anybody use the 'Levelator' software?

http://www.conversationsnetwork.org/levelator/

This is freeware. Their website says it is not a compressor, limiter or normalizer, but contains all three. You drag and drop an audio file onto the desktop and it creates another file with levels optimized (? my word not theirs).

I would think it the same as a compressor in that it brings high and low levels closer to each other without sounding compressed.

What other plug ins do the same thing?

I hope this hasn't already been covered. I searched the archives, but found nothing.

Thanks,

Craig

adobe audition has a pre-set called a 'compander' that supposedly does something like this.

I found that post right after I posted this question.

It does sound like the same thing, only with options, doesn't it?

I'll have to try it out.

I would be wary of anything that just mushes my audio and whatnot. But I'm kind of a control freak. Every setting has to be just so.

Rowell, "Compander" is quite nice (depending on your mic processing).

Yeah, this looks a bit too much like that to me... curious as to how it sounds, but this doesn't sound nearly as revolutionary as they make it out to be.

But we've all got to promote our product, I suppose Smile

I second Compander. I've tweaked the settings a little to affect my lower registry, but it does give me a "louder" and more fuller sound.

Hi Craig,

I just gave this thing a try and I wasn't too impressed. It seems to me they used very uncomplicated algorhythms to perform all the mathwork. It also colors the sound apart from compressing and expanding the audio, hence my remarks of not liking the software. It totally alters the frequency spectrum of the audio after it's processed, and that is a big minus for me. The idea behind the tool however is brilliant, but the resulting audioquality more or less tells the story why it's a free tool.

I wouldn't use it on pro VO-jobs, but for webaudio it might come in handy.

Thanks for the comments.

Other than averaging out the levels somewhat, I couldn't really notice a difference in the quality so I appreciate the input.

And this is the reason I use outboard gear. Makes it easier to determine just what I did when I screwed up (and there's a lot of that some days Rolls Eyes )

If you ever want to sweeten a piece of production...(big secret)

i-tunes Enhancer. Leave it to Apple to create something that's sounds very nice.
