OK, look....I'm not trying to beat a dead horse with this thread.... but...
I actually got a phone call from Dublin, Ireland today. Honest! The man (yes, man...not team) behind the M600 called to chat about the microphone mount.
His name is David Brown, and I must tell you I appreciated the fact that he values a live conversation person-to-person, rather than e-mails back 'n' forth, although that certainly has its place.
I think he's been surprised by the interest in the Voice-Over sector of the possible market for the M600, and he had good things to say about the VO-BB overall.
I'm writing to say that I'm going back to the "laboratory" to re-test the M600 using the Sennheiser MKH416 for reasons stated by Mr. Brown.
I'll post here and on my blog in the next 24 hours, my renewed results.

If nothing else, it would seem to indicate that the manufacturer genuinely wants people to be happy with the product, rather than just trying to sell it. Which is always cool in my book. _________________ Lou Zucaro

And I can also say that Mr. Browne is keeping an eye on this thread, so if anyone has any questions they'd like to pose to him about his unique product, I am sure he'll contact you. His customer service is very personal and he stands behind his product 100%. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I am guessing that is the same Dave Brown of dbAudioware, right?
I use some plugins from dbAudioware with my Goldwave editing software. Outstanding stuff at a very nice price.
Dave Brown, if you are monitoring this thread: Thank you for a job well done, SIR! The Mastering Limiter and the Multiband Compressor/Limiter are my favorites - and the De-Esser works very well too! |

So...If I understand from you users of the mount, I need to re-test every mic test we've done using the M600. It makes that much difference!
Uh..Mr. Brown, we need to work something out. VO Mic Tests
Really, My experience with this piece of equipment involves asking a cohort on the West Coast why the vocal chain he was using that was identical to ours sounded so much better. It wasn't the room; wasn't the wire...finially he mentioned he was using this mount. I think he wanted to keep it a secret. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

I just received a call from David and we chatted for a half hour or so. He's really come up with something unique and functional with the M600, and stands behind it 100%. Studios are buying them 6 at a time.
He's developing a mic stand to compliment it, as well.
Once I get my hands on one I will give you my 2 cents on it with whatever mics I have laying around. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Hey George.... got awful busy what with CBS carrying the March Madness, sending our newscast scheduling into catch-as-catch-can mode Thurs & Fri. I plan to post soundfile tests of the Sennheiser MKH with and without the M600 this weekend, still.

3:40a PST.... Tom Ackerman's probably doing a weathercast right now, and I haven't even put my Easter Sunday to bed yet.
My last act before closing the lid on my laptop, though, will be posting this LINK referring you to my latest (last?) blog on the M600 mic-mount comparison.
Many of you (including the inventor: David Browne) expressed an interest in hearing the mic-mount used with the Sennheiser MKH416 vs. Sennheiser's own (budget) mic-mount.
You'll find it in that article.

This thread along with another now active has me thinking about microphone mounts.
I can see where they could make a difference and why. I'm wondering if upgrading from the shock mount that comes with most better studio mics is a common thing to do or is that one of the last things that people think about? _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Bob, unfortunately in our industry it's often overlooked.
Musicians though seem to keep a better eye on it from my experience, but even still... it's not a major think that keeps folks up at night.
As for whether an additional mount is worth better than the one that came with the mic, it depends. Some companies make rock solid mounts for their mics, but most don't. I didn't like the shockmount for my U47s or RM2Js so I decided to try out a few different shockmounts offered by various companies. I ended up with the M600. I use it for some mics, but not for others... which is more of a personal preference as opposed to a genuine need (I did have a need with the aforementioned mics). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

OK, so I'm lookiing at this mount from Dave's pictures. I had thought one of the advantages of the suspension mounts was isolating the mic from vibration. How does this mount achieve this, or do I need to start working on my ME degree after I finish my EE? _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Think ME.
One of the issues with cheaper shockmounts is that the mic moves when subjected to SPL, such as speaking, yelling, etc. This shockmount goes in the opposite direction and basically serves as a HALO mount for your mic.
Will it protect the mic from an accidental bump with the mic stand? Not really, but as far as isolating it from unwanted vibrations from your recorded source by clamping it into place? It does that pretty well, and according to the manufacturer this is especially noticeable in the lower end of the spectrum.
We've used custom mounts similar to this for isolation of high performance items we've built. It works as far as isolation from unwanted vibration goes.
Be thankful, as our mounts run in excess of 10M each. That said, it was for a different kind of application. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Greetings folks, saw this topic and figured this would be a good a place as any to share a thought about the M600. I just acquired one of these for a vintage U-87 and I have to say the results have been stunning to my ears. The "tightening" of the low end in particular was a great surprise. I was as many are skeptical at first that something like a shock mount could have any effect whatsoever but at least to my ears, it is indeed an improvement.
I will agree with several other folks here that David Browne has created a terrific product. I look forward to trying this thing out on some ribbon mics next. |
