I have joined the list of people who neti.
And looking at the packets, it seems like the only ingredients are salt and sodium bicarb. When I run out of the initial supply, can I make my own? In what proportion? Do you use anything else? What has worked best for everyone?

You can always order more packets online. Personally, I would be too afraid to mix my own. Wouldn't want to burn my nose off Smile I only use half a packet, and can only Neti Pot at night because it causes slight irritation (which is always gone by morning). I would NEVER Neti before a session!

essentially what you are using is saline solution. And here is how you make it. http://www.craig.copperleife.com/health/saline.htm

Good luck

The recipe in James Alburger's book (2nd edition) is:

16 oz bottled water
1 slightly rounded teaspoon non-iodized salt (Kosher is recommended)
1/2 rounded teaspoon baking soda

If it's too strong, use less salt. And you can warm it up a bit in the microwave.

Usually I like to use chicken necks, gizzards, livers and the like. Good and smelly. In a pinch fish guts will do.

Wait, that's my crab pot. Nevermind.

1/4 teaspoon of sea salt. That's what came with my Neti pot. It seems to work just fine. Note: don't use water that's too warm...

I actually found myself talking out loud to that video, especially yelling "Noooooo!!!!!" toward the end. And what an appropriate ending.

Reminds me of when one of the Wild Boys snorted wasabi in Japan. I almost threw up right with him. **shudder**

As far as making your own mix, thanks for the recipe, Mary! I find it convenient to buy it, all the while knowing that making my own would be the easiest way to save $10. Hence, ingredients $0.03 , convenience $9.97
Wal-Mart wins again.

Slightly OT, but depending on what you're using a neti pot for, you might want to look into "balloon sinuplasty" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinuplasty_%28procedure%29)

Basically, the procedure is like balloon angioplasty - a small balloon on a catheter is inserted into the nasal passages and inflated, opening up the sinuses. According to the chiropractor who she was recommended to, it has several benefits from relieving headaches (my friend is getting it done to reduce migrains), tension headaches, allergies, and chronis congestion.
Interestingly enough, his explanation (and why he does it as a chiro) is that through a chain of connections, the muscles at the back of the head are anchored to the facial muscles and sinuses. Relieving the tension on the sinuses therefor readjusts the muscular tension throughout the skull.

To quote her:
"I felt cold air where I've never felt it before! It was euphoric!"

My reply:
"You were naked and drunk!" (referencing an earlier part of the conversation :) )

Best news was that he only charges $30 a session (for all six sinus passageways, plus a $40 one-time initial consultation).

Anyhoo, I'll give it a try and post here.

I'm sure no one here has ever been naked and drunk, so we await your experimental results with bated breath.

So does being "naked and drunk" apply to using the neti pot also? That wasn't with my instructions.

Since I don't buy bottled water I boil water on the stove and let it cool for a while before using.

I'm such a dit I've been using tap water and doing my neti routine fully clothed. I have to agree with Chrissy -- the documentation didn't cover the crucial issue of proper neti attire (or lack thereof).

So, if I was to meet women in the neti pot aisle at the store, I'd want to think twice? I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Here's a pdf with the recipe from my doc's office:

http://www.ent-stl.com/saltwaterrinse.pdf

He says use pickling salt. I use Kosher. Kosher sounds better than Pickled. Unless one is naked.
